Notre Dame can land two victories this weekend during the Miami showdown – Massive Fighting Irish recruiting update
Notre Dame is looking for multiple wins this weekend against Miami. Massive recruiting news fueling a big opportunity against the Hurricanes.
Notre Dame is getting another opportunity to make its case to one of the most talented defensive prospects in the 2027 recruiting class. Tampa Bay (Fla.) Jesuit linebacker Kaden Henderson is expected to be in South Bend this weekend when the Fighting Irish welcome the No. 1 Miami Hurricanes for one of the biggest games of the 2026 college football season.
Henderson is not an ordinary recruiting visitor. The five-star linebacker is currently committed to Texas A&M, and Notre Dame is attempting to pull off a significant recruiting flip involving one of the best defensive players in the country.
With Marcus Freeman and his staff continuing to prioritize the linebacker position, getting Henderson back on campus for a game of this magnitude represents an important opportunity.
The timing is particularly interesting.
Notre Dame and Miami were two of the programs competing for Henderson, and many believed the Irish were the leader, before he ultimately announced his commitment to the Aggies in June. Now, with the Irish getting another chance to showcase their program, the November 7 matchup carries some additional recruiting significance.
Henderson’s recruiting background
Henderson has been a major recruiting priority for several national programs throughout the 2027 cycle. The 6-foot-1½, 218-pound linebacker from Tampa Jesuit has collected more than 40 scholarship offers, including opportunities from Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Miami, LSU, Florida, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, and USC.
His recruitment eventually came down to an impressive group of finalists. Notre Dame, Texas A&M, and LSU were among the programs that made the strongest impressions, but the Aggies ultimately won out.
Heading into that decision, Notre Dame was in a great spot. Unfortunately, some late negative recruiting and a godfather offer from the Aggies won out.
Notre Dame offered Henderson in March 2025 during its Pot of Gold recruiting event. The relationship continued to develop over the following months, and Henderson made his first reported visit to South Bend in November 2025. He returned in April 2026 for another unofficial visit.
According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Henderson was rated a five-star prospect, the No. 24 overall player nationally, the No. 1 linebacker, and the No. 4 player in Florida in the 2027 class. His standing has also remained impressive in the updated recruiting services, with Rivals continuing to rank him as the nation’s top linebacker.
Why Henderson committed to Texas A&M
Texas A&M ultimately secured Henderson’s commitment on June 18, 2026. He announced his decision on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show, choosing the Aggies over Notre Dame, LSU, Alabama, and Miami.
A major part of Texas A&M’s recruiting pitch centered around head coach Mike Elko and linebackers coach Travis Williams. Henderson publicly credited both coaches when discussing his decision, pointing to Elko’s vision for the program and Williams’ ability to develop him into an NFL-caliber linebacker.
The Aggies had also invested significant time in the recruitment. Texas A&M offered Henderson in January 2025, hosted him for an unofficial visit in October of that year during a victory over Florida, and welcomed him back for an official visit on June 5, less than two weeks before his commitment.
Henderson became the 23rd commitment in what was then the nation’s top-ranked 2027 recruiting class for Texas A&M. It was a significant recruiting victory for Elko, especially considering the caliber of programs the Aggies beat out.
There is another important piece of this recruitment: Henderson has continued to identify himself as fully committed to Texas A&M. Notre Dame’s pursuit is legitimate, but that does not mean the Irish have already gained the upper hand.
Why Notre Dame continues to push
The relationship between Henderson and Notre Dame never disappeared after his June decision.
Freeman and linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary have continued communicating with the talented Florida prospect. That is an important distinction because the Irish are not starting from scratch. They have already established a relationship, hosted him multiple times, and were one of the programs he seriously considered before choosing the Aggies.
Notre Dame’s persistence also comes at an interesting time for Texas A&M. The Aggies have experienced some difficult moments on the field, including a September home loss to Kentucky, led by former Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchey. That result gave the Irish another reason to believe the door might not be completely closed.
Notre Dame’s staff has also continued emphasizing its ability to develop linebackers and put defensive players in positions to succeed. Freeman’s defensive background, combined with Jean-Mary’s experience coaching the position, gives the Irish a compelling pitch.
There is a lot to like about Henderson’s fit in South Bend. He is not simply an inside linebacker who can make tackles between the numbers. His athleticism allows him to play multiple roles, whether that means attacking downhill, covering ground in space, blitzing off the edge, or helping defend against the passing game.
For a Notre Dame defense that values versatility and physicality at linebacker, Henderson checks a lot of boxes.
The production explains why Notre Dame wants him
Henderson’s high recruiting ranking is backed up by legitimate production at Tampa Jesuit.
As a junior in 2025, he recorded:
- 49 total tackles
- 13 tackles for loss
- Nine sacks
- 20 quarterback hurries
- Four pass breakups
- Two forced fumbles
- One fumble recovery
He put together those numbers despite missing five games with an injury.
His senior season has been just as impressive. Through six recorded games in the latest available reporting, Henderson had accumulated 40 tackles, nine tackles for loss, six sacks, six quarterback hurries, two pass breakups, and a fumble recovery.
That production is particularly impressive when considering his versatility. Henderson has the ability to operate as a traditional off-ball linebacker while also creating problems for opposing offenses as a pass rusher.
Rivals’ scouting evaluation highlights his length, closing speed, instincts, and ability to get downhill quickly. He also shows a willingness to take on blockers and finish tackles with physicality. Those traits make him an intriguing prospect for a defense that wants its linebackers to be involved in multiple areas of the game.
Miami weekend could be an important recruiting moment
There is a reason Notre Dame has made getting Henderson back to campus such a priority.
The November 7 matchup against Miami is arguably the biggest recruiting opportunity of the regular season for Freeman and his staff. The Irish will have an opportunity to showcase the atmosphere at Notre Dame Stadium, compete against the nation’s No. 1 team, and make a statement in front of several important recruiting targets.
For Henderson, this is an opportunity to see Notre Dame in a completely different environment than his previous visits. A massive rivalry game with significant College Football Playoff implications is about as good a recruiting atmosphere as the Irish can offer.
There is also the added storyline of Miami being one of the programs that pursued him before his commitment to Texas A&M. Henderson will get an up-close look at two of the programs that were involved in his recruitment, with Notre Dame attempting to convince him that South Bend is ultimately the right destination.
The timing matters, too. With the December signing period approaching, Notre Dame cannot afford to let this recruitment drag on indefinitely if it hopes to change Henderson’s mind.
This is not a situation where the Irish can simply rely on their previous relationship and hope things work out. They need to make a strong impression, continue building trust, and give Henderson legitimate reasons to reconsider his commitment.
Henderson’s visit is one of the most important recruiting storylines to follow this weekend. Notre Dame is pursuing a player who could immediately elevate its 2027 defensive class and potentially become a cornerstone of the linebacker room for years to come.
The Irish have been chasing Henderson for well over a year. They were close to landing him before Texas A&M won the recruitment in June, but Freeman and his staff have refused to walk away.
Getting him to South Bend for the Miami game is an important step. It doesn’t guarantee a flip, particularly with Henderson continuing to publicly support the Aggies, but it gives Notre Dame another opportunity to make its case.
Landing a five-star, nationally elite linebacker away from Texas A&M would be a massive victory for Freeman. This weekend could go a long way toward determining whether that possibility becomes realistic.
