The Tennessee Vols’ College Football Playoff hopes are essentially dead after UT didn’t get the chaos it needed this past weekend.

Tennessee was ranked No. 20 in last week’s rankings, and there’s little room for them to move up this week. The only teams ranked ahead of Tennessee that lost last weekend were Georgia Tech and USC.

Where Tennessee is projected to land in the new College Football Playoff rankings

CBS Sports has the Vols moving up just one spot in this week’s rankings, with Tennessee predicted to land at No. 19 on Tuesday night.

“Don’t let the inflated ranking fool you, the Vols have beaten one team with a winning record this season (East Tennessee),” wrote CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford. “Narrow losses to Georgia and Oklahoma were tough to stomach at home, and Tennessee gets one last opportunity against a ranked opponent against Vanderbilt.”

The Athletic also has Tennessee coming at No. 19 this week.

The Vols are in a weird spot where it seems like everyone understands they’re a good team — they should’ve beaten Georgia. And a couple of catastrophic mistakes cost them in losses to Alabama and Oklahoma.

Tennessee, however, doesn’t have a marquee win. Even though the eye test suggests otherwise, there’s not a strong case for the Vols to be ranked much higher than this.
