It’s time for Sherrone Moore to pull the plug on experiment that has officially backfired for Wolverines, Bryce Underwood
It’s time for the Michigan Wolverines to make a change on offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey
The Michigan Wolverines have a coaching problem. It’s been an issue that has cropped up throughout the 2025 season, but it hasn’t mattered as much as individuals have shouldered the load against bad competition. Against the Ohio State Buckeyes, however, it became abundantly clear that this problem wasn’t going to be solved by just “out-working” the other team.
The Wolverines had circles ran around them for 50 minutes of The Game, and it’s time they make a switch on their offensive coaching staff. The Chip Lindsey hire hasn’t worked out at all.
Chip Lindsey hire has officially backfired
Initially this season, it felt like maybe Lindsey had added a new element to the Michigan offense. As time went on, however, the play calling grew predictable and stale, relying mainly on individual efforts over a cohesive gameplan. The defense made plays to give the Wolverines offense short fields (see: Washington) and that overshadowed larger efficiency problems Michigan’s offense had.
In The Game, it didn’t matter, and the Wolverines were far, far too slow to adjust to Ohio State. Two counter plays worked early on, Ohio State adjusted to it, and Michigan did not. At one point in the game, Michigan was down 17-9. Underwood uncorks a seam shot (an area Ohio State has struggled to defend all year) to Donaven McCulley for a 26-yard explosive. Michigan never took another shot play downfield until it was far too late.
The very next drive, Michigan was now down 24-9. The offense might as well have not even tried, opening up with a 0-yard run, a two-yard loss, and two short incompletions before punting. They got a gift of a defensive pass interference penalty bailing out a third and eight, and then immediately turtled as soon as they got onto the Ohio State side of the field.
The passing concepts are stale, the offense is predictable, the sequencing of plays is abysmal. There’s nothing coherent going on offensively, and it’s starting to take a toll on Bryce Underwood. Underwood hasn’t taken a step in his development all season. The touch hasn’t developed, the processing hasn’t improved, his accuracy is the same as it was when they took on the Oklahoma Sooners in Week 2.
Last season, Davis Warren passed for 62 yards on the Buckeyes. This year? Underwood passed for 63. All that for a single yard difference. Michigan parted ways with offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell last season, and he at least beat the Buckeyes. At this point, what’s the argument for Chip Lindsey?
