Michigan QB Bryce Underwood’s latest comment is going viral that might show a real disconnect with Kyle Whittingham
Things aren’t great in Michigan and the latest quote from QB Bryce Underwood don’t come off the greatest when it comes to the relationship he has with head coach Kyle Whittingham.
The Michigan Wolverines are 1-0 on the 2026 college football season, but you would think they’re winless despite beating Western Michigan 13-12 in a game that sparked plenty of discussion around the clock ruling by officials and the final touchdown pass on a Hail Mary by Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood.
Michigan won by just a point against a team it should have blown out to begin the season, and the Wolverines have a big game on tap against Oklahoma around the corner.
Following the game against Western Michigan, Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham was very honest about his quarterback, who didn’t play well out of the gates to begin the season.
“He’s our QB right now,” Whittingham stated. “And it’s not something that’s infinite. At some point, we’ve got to turn a corner and we’ve got to see improvement, as we do with a lot of stuff; you’ve got to see improvement out of the coaches, so it’s not just on Bryce. It’s not just Bryce’s job that is not absolutely set in concrete. You’ve got to perform week in and week out and become somebody that is playing at a level we can win with.”
Those comments leave a lot of questions around Underwood’s future status following his performance against Western Michigan, where he went 12-of-22 passing for 170 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, as well as 47 yards on the ground, one rushing touchdown, and a lost fumble. It wasn’t the game Underwood needed coming off an underwhelming freshman season.
A possible disconnect between Bryce Underwood and Kyle Whittingham may have been disclosed
Underwood was asked about Whittingham’s comments on his job security on Wednesday and acted like he had never heard anything about it.
“There were comments about that? That’s cool. I didn’t see that. It’s cool,” Underwood stated.
The way Underwood came off nonchalant about the whole thing at the press conference points to a possible disconnect between the starting quarterback at Michigan and the head coach. Underwood could be telling the truth. He could be a guy who isn’t online all that much, but these comments were everywhere and they caught the national spotlight. If Underwood didn’t see them himself, it’s hard to believe someone didn’t show them to him.
Following how he played against Western Michigan, Underwood has a chance to right the wrongs from the start of the season and bounce back in a big way against No. 11 Oklahoma on Saturday at home. It’s a chance for Michigan to quiet the noise around the program despite being 1-0 on the season, and it’s a game Underwood badly needs to play well in.
If he doesn’t, a quarterback change happening and freshman Tommy Carr getting the keys to the offense would not be a surprise.
