NFL drops the hammer on DK Metcalf with an unprecedented suspension following his altercation with a Lions fan in Detroit
The NFL has come down hard on DK Metcalf for his altercation with a Lions fan in Detroit.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have been bracing for impact ever since DK Metcalf got physical with a fan in the stands during Sunday’s win against the Detroit Lions. It was never a question of if Metcalf would be punished.
The question was: what would be the severity? After hearing both sides of the story, including allegations of racial and misogynistic remarks from Metcalf, and a strong denial of said accusations from the fan, the NFL has made its decision, and it’s a strong one.
NFL suspends DK Metcalf two games for altercation with Lions fan
“The NFL has suspended Steelers WR DK Metcalf without pay for two games for conduct detrimental to the NFL for initiating a physical confrontation with a fan during Sunday’s game against the Lions,” wrote Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on Instagram.
“Metcalf’s actions violate league policy, which specifies that “players may not enter the stands or otherwise confront fans at any time on game day and…if a player makes unnecessary physical contact with a fan in any way that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct or presents crowd-control issues and/or risk of injury, he will be held accountable.”
DK Metcalf out for the remainder of the regular season
The NFL had quite literally never found itself in this situation, and so it acted with what many believe to be a harsh judgment, especially in light of what Metcalf alleges. One game was the expectation, but two games and the end of Metcalf’s regular season is a big time penalty from the league and Roger Goodell.
Metcalf will appeal the suspension per multiple reports, but the appeal won’t be heard by NFL officials. Instead, it will be heard by Goodell. Meaning, it’s safe to assume that Metcalf has played his last snap of the regular season with the Steelers this year.
The good news for Pittsburgh is that barring back-to-back losses and two wins from the Baltimore Ravens, they will win the AFC North. They can wrap up the division as early as Saturday if the Ravens lose to the Green Bay Packers.
But if they don’t and the Steelers were to fall to the Browns on Sunday, suddenly the Steelers will be in a winner-take-all game without their best offensive player. That’s a spot no one wants to be in.
Metcalf would be eligible to return for the Steelers postseason run, but Pittsburgh has to get there first. With concerns regarding Calvin Austin III’s hamstring, and now no Metcalf, the Steelers could be without their top two pass catchers these last two weeks.
