Packers’ Malik Willis could help the Colts playoff chances with a win, but he could also be auditioning for them
Daniel Jones’ injury will force the Colts to at least consider other options at QB for 2026, and one of those should be Malik Willis.
The Indianapolis Colts and their fans will have all eyes on the Houston Texans and Los Angeles Chargers matchup Saturday. For good reason, of course, as a Chargers win would keep the Colts’ playoff hopes alive for already another day.
Another important game will be the night game between the Green Bay Packers and the Baltimore Ravens. A Packers win would increase the Colts’ chances of winning the strength-of-victory tiebreaker over the Texans, if it comes to it.
For that to happen, Packers backup Malik Willis will have to lead the charge, and if he doesn’t, it not only could help the Colts but it could also be a good chance for him to audition for them and other QB-needy teams ahead of the offseason.
Should the Colts consider adding Malik Willis this offseason?
Willis has appeared in three games this season and has completed 12 of his 14 attempts for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Now, he gets his first chance to start because Jordan Love is ruled out of the game. This is a big opportunity for him to land a long-term starting job in the future.
He was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. He was traded to the Packers ahead of the 2024 season and has spent the past two years there. His rookie contract is set to expire after this year, and he is expected to become a free agent this offseason. Due to Daniel Jones tearing his Achilles, the Colts are heading into the offseason with mystery around the QB position yet again.
They could look to bring Jones back, but it would be silly of the team not to also consider other options. Willis, being a free agent, makes him an intriguing option to look at, as a trade wouldn’t be necessary. The Colts are rooting for the Packers to win for their own playoff hopes, but they will also be monitoring what Willis can do as the starter.
