It may have only lasted three weeks, but Philip Rivers’ return to the NFL at 44 years old, after a five-year hiatus, is something NFL fans will remember for a while. What began as an Indianapolis Colts roster move that many viewed as crazy and outright laughable ended up being incredibly inspiring.

The team is moving forward with Riley Leonard as their Week 18 starter, ending Rivers’ return to the league. Rivers appeared on the Up & Adams Show and shared what’s next for his career, and his answer shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone.

Philip Rivers announces his retirement from the NFL, for real this time

Rivers announced that he will again retire from the NFL, but this time for good. We won’t be seeing the future Hall of Famer putting on another NFL helmet and running on the field to throw passes ever again. He even said he didn’t think he would have done this for anyone other than the Colts because it was the perfect situation for him to say yes.

“I knew I was done in 2020; everything just lined up just right. I said to someone, ‘I just made up a team; I don’t mean the Chicago Bears or the Minnesota Vikings, but if someone like that were called, there would be no chance,’” Rivers told Adams. “It was a place I’ve been, a team I was familiar with, the offense was exactly the same, a coach I knew, it was all those things that made it the perfect storm.”

Rivers shared that he will return to the sidelines in Alabama to coach high school football. He will have a son entering his senior season as QB and another entering his freshman year. So, he’s excited to coach them on the same team. This saga may be coming to an end, but it won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

This story inspired many and demonstrated how effective the mind can be for someone playing the QB position. Thank you, Uncle, or better yet, Grandpa Phil, for an unforgettable few weeks. Enjoy retirement for real this time.
