Bills’ Sean McDermott provides immediate update on Maxwell Hairston with shocking admission after win over the Jets
A critical injury update from head coach Sean McDermott.
The Buffalo Bills celebrated the farewell to Highmark Stadium with a dominant win over the New York Jets in Week 18. That’s not to say that everything was coming up roses for Buffalo, as cornerback Maxwell Hairston and kicker Matt Prater went down with injuries during the victory.
Head coach Sean McDermott provided an immediate update after the game, with a shocking admission about why cornerback Tre’Davious White and Hairston were even playing late in the contest. Needless to say, fans are worried about Hairston’s availability moving forward.
Injury update on Maxwell Hairston
“Yeah, a little bit of an ankle,” McDermott said. “You know, really would have preferred not to have one of he or Tre out there, but we were in a situation where we were out of (options) and didn’t have another corner to go to on the active, you know, at that point. I think Dane’s (Jackson) practice squad, so we were out of practice squad ups. We had two already being used, so it’s unfortunate there. We’ll see where it goes here.”
Unfortunate doesn’t even begin to cut it; it was flat-out awful to see Hairston go down with an injury. Reportedly, Hairston could be seen in a walking boot after the game concluded.
Matt Prater injury update from McDermott
For Prater, it leaves Buffalo without a kicker potentially for the playoffs, though McDermott said the team would be waiting until Monday to hear more information about his availability. Prater came in relief of kicker Tyler Bass, but had missed the two previous games with a nagging quad injury.
“Yeah, you know, it happened in the second quarter, so we started to put a plan into place, and then we got in at halftime and were told he can’t go at all, so, yeah, we’ll have to see what it looks like tomorrow,” McDermott said. “I’m sure they’ll get some films of it, and we’ll know a little bit more, but yeah. Unfortunate.”
We’ll keep you updated as we know more information about both Hairston and Prater.
At the end of the day, the win and the memories at Highmark Stadium mattered, but the injuries cast a long shadow over what should have been a perfect sendoff. With playoffs looming, Buffalo now finds itself holding its breath, waiting to see how costly those final snaps in Week 18 might end up being.
