The Washington Commanders are rolling the dice and riding with David Blough as the new offensive coordinator after moving on from Kliff Kingsbury.

Blough has never called plays or had his own offense before, but fans shouldn’t worry about that. The Commanders made the quick decision because of how highly they think of Blough and his potential, but they aren’t the only ones.

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson is very familiar with Blough and was glowing about him when he was asked about his promotion in Washington.

Ben Johnson gives David Blough the highest praise after his promotion to offensive coordinator

Johnson is seen as one of the best offensive minds in the NFL, and he’s turned the Bears around in just one season, so what he had to say about Blough should be music to Commanders fans’ ears. Despite people’s feelings about Johnson after what he said about joining the Commanders last offseason, he knows what he’s doing and knows the offensive side of the ball as well as anyone.

Johnson was asked about Blough’s promotion in Washington during his press conference on Friday, and he couldn’t help but smile and give him a raving review about his future.

“Yeah, he’s got a bright future as well,” Johnson said. “He’s really smart, has a natural way of connecting with everybody, coaches and players alike. And I know He’s highly respected, not just for me, but also obviously by the Washington staff. They found tremendous value in him as well. I think he’ll do an outstanding job in that role. I think he’s really smart. Having played quarterback. He’s got that inward feel of how to help elevate that position, you know, and I think he’ll be able to do that in a play-calling role going forward. So I think he’ll be, he’ll be one of those young guys that gets a head job before you know it.”

Ben Johnson thinks highly of David Blough, and he showed it last season as well

Johnson isn’t just saying all of this to be nice, and his actions actually back up everything he says. People won’t remember this, but Johnson tried to hire Blough last offseason for his staff on the Bears, but the Commanders blocked the request.

Blough also spent many years with Johnson on the Detroit Lions before they each went their separate ways after the 2023 season. It’s safe to assume Blough will run an offense very similar to Johnson, since it’s what he played quarterback in, and also fits what the Commanders need to do on offense.

It’s very refreshing to hear Johnson speak highly of Blough with a lot of fans unsure about how he will do, and he could even be the Commanders’ next head coach, as Johnson alludes to being a possibility as a fast-rising young coach.
