Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall continues to be active in the transfer portal by adding a really intriguing depth piece at cornerback in East Carolina’s Jordy Lowery.

He joins a group of cornerbacks in Gainesville that has a lot of intrigue to it. New defensive coordinator Brad White has some top players returning in Dijon Johnson and Cormani McClain, while multiple freshmen from last season are ready to take a step forward in J’Vari Flowers, Ben Hanks III, and Lagonza Hayward. The Gators also have C.J. Bronaugh and C.J. Hester coming in the 2026 recruiting class.

Jordy Lowery adds veteran depth to young position group

The addition of Lowery is an important one for the Gators. While a player entering his fourth year who started his career at Western Carolina isn’t going to be a major addition, but it will provide something the room doesn’t have much of right now: experience.

In his career, Lowery has played 1,275 snaps, including 460 last season at East Carolina where he started nine of 12 games last season, including the final seven. Last season, Lowery allowed 22 catches for 274 yards and four touchdowns on 263 coverage snaps. Lowery also knocked down four passes in 2025.

At Western Carolina in 2024, Lowery was a ball hawk. He did allow 31 catches for 461 yards and three touchdowns on 400 coverage snaps per Pro Football Focus, but he paired that with six interceptions and seven passes defended. The one area he will need to work on is penalties, as he’s received eight of them so far in his career.

Lowery is likely to be involved in the defense this season, possibly earning a starting role in White’s unit. Regardless of whether he starts, it adds needed depth to an important unit.
