The Buffalo Bills aren’t playing in the Super Bowl, and that makes me very sad, as it does for the rest of the Bills Mafia. One bad call from the referees had Buffalo walking out of Denver and watching the rest of the NFL playoffs. I will die on the hill that receiver Brandin Cooks caught the football.

What makes matters worse is that the division rival New England Patriots are Super Bowl-bound, with former Bills receiver Stefon Diggs on the team. Diggs and the Bills have a long history, some of it not good, and the Bills consumed a substantial amount of cap space to trade him away.

Ahead of the Super Bowl, Diggs had nothing but love for quarterback Josh Allen and the Bills, saying that he wishes things were different and that Allen is a Hall of Fame quarterback. Well, Allen learned that information during an interview and had quite a response for Diggs.

“You know, full transparency, I’ve been off all social media s0 I did not see that until you said that,” Allen said. “Again, I’ve got nothing but love and respect for Stef. I mean, some of the plays that he made for us and even continues to make now. I was watching, I think it was the Texans game, where he caught a little short post in the end zone, hands caught it. The dude is an unbelievable football player. He was a great teammate when he was here in Buffalo. And again, nothing but love and respect for him [ . . . ] He’s an absolute stud; he’s a fantastic football player.”

Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs were magical during their time together

Diggs was traded to Buffalo to give Allen a true No. 1 wide receiver, and what transpired was nothing short of greatness. While his tenure was a little short-lived compared to what it could have been, Diggs made his mark in Bills history and had some of the most electric moments in a Buffalo uniform.

Diggs was with the team for four seasons and played in 66 games, totalling 445 receptions for 5,372 yards and 37 touchdowns. He well outplayed what he was doing with the Minnesota Vikings and was a big part of the reason why Allen and the offense had so much success.

There was a running joke in the Bills Mafia circles that 17 (Allen’s number) + 14 (Diggs’ number) = 6 (touchdown) because anytime the two hooked up on the football field, it had the chance to go for a touchdown.

Even with the chapter closed and the jerseys now different colors, moments like this are a reminder of what that connection meant and still means to Buffalo. Allen didn’t dodge the past or downplay it. He embraced it with respect, appreciation, and maturity, the same traits that helped elevate the franchise in the first place.

The Super Bowl might not include the Bills this year, but the legacy of No. 17 and No. 14 lighting up defenses together is still etched in Bills history, and nothing about that will ever change.
