In January, fans of the Oklahoma Sooners finally got what they have been hoping for for years, when the Sooners parted ways with tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley. Shortly after, the Sooners hired former Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten to replace him as tight ends coach.

A month after his departure, Finley has landed on his feet on a new coaching spot and is aiming to rebuild his career alongside one of the top offensive minds in college football. Finley has been hired as an offensive assistant at Texas State under head coach G.J. Kinne, working mainly with the quarterbacks.

It’s unfortunate that an OU alum has his reputation with Sooners fans in tatters, but truthfully, Finley’s tenure with the Sooners was a disaster. The position room completely fell apart under his tutelage, and this year was actively disrupting the flow of the offense. What has always been a standout room for the Sooners quickly became the worst unit on the entire roster, and by the end of it, Finley wasn’t even involved in their transfer portal process before he was officially out the door.

However, Finley carved out a solid career before his time at Oklahoma. Finley was the PGC for Lane Kiffin’s offense and had spent the three years prior to that coaching tight ends at Missouri and Texas A&M. He’s spent time around strong offensive minds like Kevin Wilson, Josh Heupel, Jimbo Fisher, Lincoln Riley, Lane Kiffin, and Ben Arbuckle in his career as well, something that no doubt helps his background.

With a fresh new start working with a new position group and admittedly significantly less pressure on him, perhaps Finley could begin turning his career around moving forward after the way his Oklahoma tenure ended. Kinne’s offenses have been nothing but productive at every stop, and that could help Finley start a new chapter in the coaching world.
