Grading The Signing: Buffalo Bills pull off low-risk, high-reward move with C.J. Gardner-Johnson deal
A solid job by Brandon Beane and the front office.
The Buffalo Bills got a good one with veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
Adam Schefter broke the news that the Bills and the former Chicago Bears defensive back agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth up to $6 million. Those numbers are just agent speak; the real compensation will come out soon, it’s just the maximum amount Gardner-Johnson could get from the deal. New defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard has to be thrilled with the decision.
A low-risk, high-reward move for the Bills by signing Gardner-Johnson
He’s had his ups and downs in his career, and by no means is Gardner-Johnson a sure thing. He’s going to have to compete in that room, but right now, there’s hardly any competition. There’s one thing that’s for certain, though, and that’s the fact that Gardner-Johnson is ferocious.
He’s shown bright flashes throughout his career, highlighting that he could be an elite talent.
The seven-year veteran has jumped around the league, spending time with the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, and Houston Texans. He’s played in 87 games with 20 interceptions, 55 passes defensed, seven sacks, and 370 combined tackles.
Gardner-Johnson bounced around the alignment in 2025, playing 166 snaps in the box, 2 as a free safety, and 340 in the slot during his time with the Bears. In 565 total snaps with Chicago, he earned a 45.4 for his coverage, 61,4 for his pass rush, a 43.5 for tackling, and a 61.3 for his run defense according to Pro Football Focus grades.
Johnson had a great year with the Eagles in 2024, and the Bills are hoping to get some of that magic.
Johnson adds a much-needed dynamic to the Bills’ defense
One area where Buffalo struggled mightily was against the run, something that Gardner-Johnson could help with. Kole Noble from A to Z Sports Chicago highlighted what Gardner-Johnson brings to the table and gave some insights as to why things haven’t worked out with other organizations.
“C.J. Gardner-Johnson hasn’t developed the best reputation for himself the last couple of seasons and burnt a lot of bridges at previous stops, but he stayed quiet throughout the second half of the 2025 season after joining the Chicago Bears and reuniting with Dennis Allen. Gardner-Johnson has a clear idea of what his best role is and isn’t afraid to speak his mind, which can rub coaches and teammates the wrong way. He knows he’s at his best when he can be aggressive close to the line of scrimmage and plays with a fiery spirit, which again can get him into some trouble.
“But, sometimes a team needs that kind of guy in the locker room. Just be careful lining him up in man coverage against speedy wide receivers in the slot. Other than that, he’s a true playmaker in run support and attacking the quarterback.” – Kole Noble
A true playmaker is exactly what the doctor ordered. I still think there’s going to be some competition in this room, but I think that Gardner-Johnson could thrive alongside Cole Bishop.
As for the overall grading of the signing, I like it.
He’s by no means perfect, and his play can falter at times. It’s not a slam dunk, blockbuster signing, but it’s a perfect one for this time of year.
If Gardner-Johnson can bring the same edge and playmaking ability he showed during his best stretches, this could quietly end up being one of the better under-the-radar additions of the offseason. On a one-year deal with minimal risk, the Bills are betting Leonhard can unlock the aggressive, disruptive defender that made him such a headache for opposing offenses.
Overall grade for the signing: B
