Former Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello was named as the new manager of the San Francisco Giants last October, but he didn’t actually spend that much time in the Bay Area during the offseason.

Vitello did plenty of traveling after getting hired by the Giants, literally going around the world (from the Dominican Republic to South Korea) to meet his players before reporting to spring training in Arizona.

Now that the season has started, Vitello will spend half the year in San Francisco.

Tony Vitello experiences his first San Francisco earthquake

Vitello received the full Bay Area experience this week when a mild earthquake hit.

It wasn’t Vitello’s first earthquake — he said he experienced one in Long Beach several years ago — but it was his first NorCal earthquake.

“I did,” said Vitello when asked if he felt the earthquake. “It definitely woke me up.”

“No, I was here for the area code games in Long Beach, and was eating dinner in Venice Beach,” added Vitello when asked if it was his first earthquake. “And I thought — the place next door was a nightclub — that they were throwing on the DJ music or something with bass. But I found out it was an earthquake. And then last night, I don’t know why, but I just knew right away. But it woke me up, for sure.”

Vitello is always good for a fun story during his media sessions with reporters — as San Francisco beat writers are quickly learning.

Vitello is never lacking for memorable quotes.
