Notre Dame football recruiting has done a much better job of adding impact talent at defensive end in recent years. That includes Boubacar Traore, Bryce Young, Rodney Dunham, and Ebenezer Ewetade, among others.

In the 2027 recruiting class, head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish are pushing hard for several talented EDGE defenders. That includes 2027 Greenwich (Conn.) Country Day star pass rusher Mekai Brown, who is being pursued by some of the very best programs in all of college football. That has not stopped Notre Dame from pursuing the Connecticut star.

For those efforts, the Fighting Irish were able to crack the top five schools list for Brown. They were joined in the group by Ohio State, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and USC. That is quite the list of impressive options.

While Notre Dame has been doing a really good job with Brown, they are still considered to be a bit of a wildcard to add the elite pass rusher. That hasn’t stopped Freeman and CO. from pushing very hard. As we head toward official visit season, the Irish are in the conversation. Now it is up to this staff to close the deal, which they have done very consistently over the last couple of cycles.

Mekai Brown’s recruiting background

Brown is considered to be a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Brown currently sits as the No. 49 overall player, the No. 6 EDGE, and the No. 1 player in the state of Connecticut for the 2027 recruiting class. This is a toolsy player with all the upside in the world.

It should be no surprise that a long list of impressive programs is pursuing Brown right now. Some of his top offers so far include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, USC, Florida State, Indiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Auburn, South Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Maryland, UNC, UCLA, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Pitt, Boston College, Syracuse, and Rutgers, among many others.

At 6-7 and 230 pounds, Brown is a high upside pass rusher who is widely considered one of the most talented defensive ends in the country. As a sophomore in 2024, the Connecticut native managed to collect 36 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, and seven sacks. Brown also recorded two forced fumbles, broke up two passes, and recorded two safeties.
