Jon Sumrall has an incredible line discussing future of Florida Gators and what would make him do something stupid
The Florida Gators football program has been frustrating over the last decade, and Jon Sumrall’s got the right mentality to fix it.
One of the more important things that Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall had to fix was the vibes around the program.
Things were brutal at the end of Billy Napier’s tenure with the Gators. Instead of the discussion being about recruiting or the season, it was about whether or not he will keep his job. The decision was ultimately made to move on from Napier the day after their 23-21 homecoming win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Sumrall has now been on the job for five months, and he’s gotten things back to a great level, especially with recruiting.
Jon Sumrall continues to have the perfect mindset
The optimism is growing in Gainesville, mainly because of Sumrall. He has everything you could ask for from a perception standpoint and then some. In a recent interview, Sumrall made it clear that he’s holding his team to a high standard.
“I’ve got an expectation to win every game we play. That’s my expectation. Like, I’m not comfortable with anybody going, ‘How many games are you comfortable winning this year?’ Like anybody that tells me, Hhey, bowl eligible?’ I’m like, Yeah, we better be or I’ll be on top of the stadium getting ready to do something stupid. To me, you have to have urgency every day. And I think as soon as you put a ceiling or a cap on what you can do and start to think with limits in mind, you’re automatically handicapping yourself. For me, our expectation is for our guys to expect to win every freaking time we take the field.”

Sumrall is right. The bare minimum in Gainesville is to be bowl-eligible. After that, it’s winning the SEC and making the College Football Playoff so they can win a national championship.
Make no mistake about it: Sumrall has the right attitude and mindset to take this Gators program to the level it always should have been at. Now, it’s about actually getting it done come September.
