OU Sooners quarterback John Mateer may have finally just realized what it truly means to be an Oklahoman
The Oklahoma Sooners quarterback, John Mateer, was seen wearing the special OKC Thunder playoff shirt at the playoff game vs. the LA Lakers.
When Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer first came to Oklahoma, he was asked if he knew anything about the OKC Thunder. He replied that he didn’t really keep up with it much, but he did know who the team was.
And, of course, he knew who the team was, being from Texas. However, he spent the last few years before his initial season at OU in Washington state. But Mateer really spends his time working on his craft. His first year in Oklahoma, we didn’t really see him out and about much, just a Chipotle story here and there.
On Tuesday, I think he finally realized what it truly means to be an Oklahoman. Mateer went to the Oklahoma City Thunder playoff game against the Los Angeles Lakers. And, the best part—he was wearing the playoff shirts that they put on the back of your chair, so that everyone is matching.
If he didn’t see or couldn’t feel how important the Thunder was to the community he is a part of now, then he wasn’t paying much attention. The Thunder are your reigning NBA Champions, and they mean a great deal to the city and state of Oklahoma. Mateer likely felt that on Tuesday when the arena exploded after so many of the huge plays had been made. And trust me, there were some big-time plays.
Thunder beat Lakers despite bad game from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
It was Game 1 of the semis in a best-of-seven series against LeBron James and the Lakers. This series should be one that the Thunder handles easily. I mean, they did on Tuesday, and their best player, the best player in the world, didn’t play well.
SGA shot well from the field, so that wasn’t an issue. He just looked a bit out of it and had an uncharacteristic seven turnovers. Having 2 in one game is uncharacteristic for him, let alone 7.
SGA finished with just 18 points on 8/15 shooting, but the turnovers were a big reason LA was able to hang around as long as they did. However, Chet Holmgren and the big-time role players on this team stepped up in a huge way. They ended up building just an absurd lead in the fourth quarter.
If they showed they can do that without a great game from SGA, imagine what they can do when he plays well. And, imagine when they get Jalen Williams back healthy. If the team as a whole is going to play this well when Mateer is in attendance, he may need to go to every game.
