Packers seem destined for another Aaron Rodgers reunion game in 2026, but the dynamics feel different now
Green Bay will travel to Pittsburgh for their preseason opener, but Rodgers and Jordan Love will most likely sit the game, and that’s if the veteran actually returns to the Steelers.
Last year had a special moment for the Green Bay Packers, with a deeply meaningful 35-25 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. After all, it was the first time ever the Packers faced quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Having Jordan Love take that game over in the second half was something else for the fans.
On Thursday, the NFL announced its full schedule for the 2026 season. And while we already knew the Packers and Steelers wouldn’t face off in the regular season, Rodgers might be on the opposing sideline once again — well, that’s if he signs a new contract to return to the Steelers.
Green Bay goes to Pittsburgh for a preseason game
In addition to the regular season schedule, the NFL also announced the preseason slate. Curiously enough, the Packers will open their exhibition games in Pittsburgh against the Steelers. The date isn’t fully set yet, but it’s going to be between August 13-16. Anyway, that game will have a special feeling because it’s former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy’s debut for the Steelers.
Obviously, this one will feel very different than the first one against Rodgers. Mostly, because it’s just a preseason game. But also because in the preseason opener, most teams rest their starters — Rodgers might not play in the entire preseason, even if he signs back with the Steelers during the offseason. If Love and Rodgers play at all, it should be only a series or two at most.
The Packers will have two road games to open the preseason. After going to Pittsburgh, Green Bay travels to Denver to play the Broncos between Aug. 20-23.
The preseason finale happens between Aug. 27-30 against Mike LaFleur’s Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field. That’s also a special game, because it’s the first time brothers Matt and Mike will face off as NFL head coaches.
While the regular season schedule deservedly receives all the attention, the Packers’ preseason will also have some cool storylines to follow.
