Minnesota Vikings GM Nolan Teasley brings a lot more to the table than meets the eye
One Minnesota Vikings analyst’s take on the Nolan Teasley hire is a little off base, and it speaks to a bigger picture.
The Minnesota Vikings hiring Nolan Teasley to be their next general manager was a massive choice. He was the only one of the five candidates without a professional connection to the Vikings.
There have been a lot of criticisms of the Vikings for hiring connections to their high-ranking personnel and not getting new voices in the room. They bucked the trend by hiring someone without a connection to the organization.
Minnesota Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley
- Teasley was with the Seattle Seahawks starting in 2013 as an intern.
- He was on the pro personnel side from 2013-2022 before becoming assistant general manager in 2023.
- Was reportedly instrumental in helping facilitate the Russell Wilson trade.
Ben Leber’s comments on Nolan Teasley are slightly off the mark
When you look at Teasley’s background, he has a major background in the scouting world, which is what the Vikings were targeting. Ben Leber talked about the hiring on KFAN’s Power Trip morning show, pointing out that he’s a football guy.
“When you actually look at Nolan’s personality, he’s a guy that sounds like he has no ego, is just, hey, we’re here all about football, it’s all about the ball, it’s all about just finding good players and just good people, and that’s it. And he doesn’t have to have this main character syndrome, he doesn’t have to be craving the spotlight. It sounds like with all the reports that he is truly just a football guy through and through from the time that he started, so I sort of like how the, the idea in the, in the, again, the methodology went from full on, 100% analytics, and they say, let’s just get back to football. Let’s go with the football guy, and so excited to see what Nolan can do.”

It makes sense that the Vikings wanted to go the other direction by hiring someone with a scouting background versus analytics. However, it’s a little too short sided to believe analytics aren’t a part of his process.
The key to any general manager is to make sound decisions with as many data points as possible. Teasley appears to be well-rounded with his process, something the Vikings need in droves.
Only time will tell his process ends up working out for the Vikings, but he’s got the right idea.
