Jordan Addison’s latest injury swings the door open for other Vikings players help make the roster better during training camp
Vikings star wide receiver Jordan Addison recently suffered an injury during Vikings training camp. While it’s not ideal news, there is definitely a silver lining that comes with the development.
Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison will miss time during training camp after suffering a thumb injury. Head coach Kevin O’Connell addressed the media on Wednesday, confirming that imaging on Addison’s thumb came back clean with no break and no tendon damage. The thumb is jammed and sore, and Addison will need time to recover.
The Vikings’ No. 2 wide receiver will be on the practice field Wednesday, but won’t be catching footballs. That distinction matters because his absence from team drills creates a ripple effect throughout the entire wide receiver room.
Jauan Jennings, Tai Felton step into larger roles
With Addison sidelined, Jauan Jennings is likely to slide into the WR2 role, while Tai Felton emerges as the third option for the time being. Felton has had a strong training camp, including what many have called the catch of camp, maximizing a lot of what he was selected to do at the end of the third round. He still needed to show he could translate that ability to the offensive side of the ball, because on special teams he’s been fantastic.
This is his chance to prove it in a larger role.
Jordan Addison’s injury also creates opportunities for the back end of the roster
Addison’s absence also opens up reps for players fighting for roster spots further down the depth chart. Wide receiver Dillon Bell, an undrafted free agent out of Georgia, made a strong impression during mandatory minicamp, OTAs, and rookie minicamp but has been solid without standing out during training camp. Getting more opportunities with the higher-level team should help him evolve.
The same applies to players like Dontae Fleming, the second-year undrafted free agent out of Tulane, Jeshaun Jones, the third-year undrafted free agent out of Maryland, and Myles Price, last year’s kick returner who has showed a little bit of burst as a wide receiver.
What this means for the 53-man roster
The hope is that Addison will return sooner rather than later. In the meantime, other players getting these opportunities means the Vikings can strengthen organizational depth.
This stretch could also help separate players from WR4-WR9 in determining who will make the final 53-man roster. More opportunities mean more information for the coaching staff when making those depth decisions.
Who will end up getting those jobs? We don’t know, but Minnesota can take something good out of a frustrating situation. Hopefully the additional reps will help elevate the entire roster over the next few weeks while Addison recovers.
