For a couple of weeks earlier this offseason, it looked like quarterback Joey Aguilar was going to return to Tennessee for a second season.

Aguilar was hoping to secure another season of eligibility by arguing that his junior college years shouldn’t count toward his NCAA eligibility.

Instead, Aguilar was denied an injunction by Knox County Chancery Court judge Christopher D. Heagerty that would’ve allowed him to play a second season with the Vols.

After being denied a final season of eligibility, Aguilar went unselected in the 2026 NFL Draft. He signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent.

Aguilar’s eligibility battle returned to the spotlight this week after quarterback Brendan Sorsby was ruled eligible at Texas Tech despite reportedly wagering approximately $90,000 on professional and college sports over a four-year period.

On Tuesday, Aguilar was asked by News4JAX for his reaction to the Sorsby news.

“I saw what happened,” said Aguilar. “Good for him. He gets to play another year of college football, and he’s going to light it up. They’ve got a great team over there.

“I’m excited for my journey. His journey is different than mine, obviously. Everybody’s path is different. So I’m excited for him to go out there, make a little money, and have a great season. Hopefully they do good.”

When asked to compare it to his situation, Aguilar, as expected, answered in the most classy way possible.

“It’s all good,” said Aguilar. “Everything happens for a reason. I’m excited. A lot of people wish they [had] my opportunity right now. So all I can do is take advantage of that and take it day by day.”

Aguilar is battling Nick Mullens and Carter Bradley for a roster spot in Jacksonville.
