One of the Tennessee Vols’ big men just suffered a big setback early on in his time in Knoxville.

Virginia Commonwealth transfer forward Christian Fermin suffered a hand injury on Monday during practice and had surgery to repair the injury on Thursday, according to On3 Sports/VolQuest’s Mike Wilson. He will miss the remainder of the Vols’ summer practice session.

Obviously, it’s good that the injury wasn’t of the nature that will threaten his availability once practice gets ramped up during the fall semester for the season.

But as a newcomer, it’s a bit tough to have to miss the rest of the summer practices on the court with his teammates. There’s a reason they get that work in, and Fermin will have to get the ground running when he’s able to get back on the court.

Fermin came over to Tennessee in the last transfer portal window after spending his first four years with the Rams. He averaged 4.0 points per game, 3.1 rebounds per game, and 1.2 blocks per game over 90 career games with VCU.

Tennessee’s fall practice will get underway in late September.
