Dallas Cowboys honeymoon phase with free agent signing is over before it even begins
The Dallas Cowboys are moving on from a quiet free agent signing that had some potential following recent suspension.
We can call it a day with one of the quietest free agent signings of the Dallas Cowboys’ offseason following Sunday’s transaction wire.
Back in June, the Cowboys signed defensive end Charles Snowden. Though it was a quite move based on the timing, it was an intriguing one. Why? Snowden seemed like a legit 53-man roster candidate. He started nine games in each of the last two seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders. Though his production didn’t scream starting potential, he appeared like a solid depth piece.
Things changed when the NFL suspended Snowden for three games due to a DUI incident from Dec. 2024.
Cowboys waive Snowden
Per Sunday’s transaction notice, the Cowboys are waiving Snowden only three practices into training camp.
The decision is rather unsurprising. Many people questioned if the Cowboys were aware of the possibility of a suspension with Snowden, given the fact that the incident was so long ago. Whether they were or not, it’s clear they did not like the outcome.
The Cowboys are quickly turning the page, making things a little bit clearer at outside linebacker/edge rusher.
As the Cowboys gear up for their first padded practice on Monday, the battle for the last roster spots are outside linebacker is one of the top ones to watch. Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, and first-round rookie Malachi Lawrence are the perceived roster locks (maybe fourth-round rookie LT Overton is, too, but his position is unclear).
The final spots will be competed for by the likes of Marist Liufau, James Houston, Isaiah Land, Tyrus Wheat, and Sam Williams.
Cowboys sign OT as a result
With Snowden’s departure opening up a roster spot, the Cowboys also signed OT Sebastian Gutierrez. Gutierrez entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2022 (Denver Broncos) and has been a journeyman since.
He’s played two regular season games and is 28 years old.
