Dak Prescott already noticed a big difference from this year’s Dallas Cowboys defense only a few days into training camp
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is facing the fourth defensive coordinator in as many years during training camp. He’s already seeing a promising difference.
The Dallas Cowboys are only a few practices into their 2026 training camp and truth be told, Dak Prescott looks sharp. He looks like a serious problem for the defense, consistently finding CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. In other words, he’s picking up where he left off in 2025.
That hasn’t stopped Prescott from noticing a big difference from the Cowboys defense he’s facing every day. And with the Cowboys set to wear pads for the first time on Monday, it’s only fair to say the battle between an elite offense and a rebuilt defense is only beginning.
Prescott acknowledges key difference in Cowboys defense
This summer, Prescott is facing the fourth Cowboys defensive coordinator in camp since 2023. What has he noticed from the new-look defense led by 34-year-old defensive coordinator Christian Parker?
“A defense that is communicating,” Prescott told reporters last week. “A defense that takes a lot of pride in what they do in each and every one of their calls, taking pride in playing with one another.”
For Parker, who wants to run a defense that is multiple and capable to adjust on the fly, communication is crucial. In order to do that, players have to be loud. So far, Prescott is impressed with the decibels coming from the other side of the line of scrimmage.
“When we motion, you can hear how loud they are and them getting to the right fits or calls that they need to make, and just challenging us,” Prescott added.
Prescott’s praise is no small thing
Though Prescott is aware the pads have yet to come on, his description on the unit’s communication shouldn’t be overlooked. Last year, under Matt Eberflus, the Cowboys defense consistently had blown coverages and misalignments proved costly in the run game. Communication, or lack thereof, was often cited as a reason for the defensive struggles that largely ruined the 2025 Cowboys reason.
Communicating this well early on is a testament to Parker’s teaching. Those around the team noticed the results from Parker’s approach (which even includes Kahoot! quizzes) as early as the offseason program.
Leading up to training camp, Dallas Morning News reporter Joseph Hoyt told me in my A to Z Sports Dallas show he believed the Cowboys defense wasn’t “at step one still” of learning the scheme.
Hoyt added: “I feel like there might be step one and a half already.”
Prescott’s comments back that up, even if there’s still a lot left to prove. Fortunately for the Cowboys, Dak believes the right coach is leading the unit.
“I have a lot of back-and-forth with (Parker), whether it’s on the field and us trash-talking or it’s just in the hallway before meetings,” Prescott said. “That’s a super prideful guy who’s going to do everything he can to make sure he puts those 11 guys in the right position and make sure that they’re comfortable in whatever they have to do.”
