Las Vegas Raiders make a few roster moves, including signing a player who’s going to be right in the battle for a final 53-man roster spot
The Las Vegas Raiders have a few running backs on the roster, and after signing Dare Ogunbowale, the room is a bit better.
The Las Vegas Raiders are trying to find the best 90-men for their roster to fight for 53 spots. That’s the objective of every single team, even if it means grabbing a guy who it looks like won’t make the roster. You get the best players that fit what your football team needs. And Vegas has done that. Or, at least they think they have.
On Thursday, the Raiders signed a new running back. They are bringing in a guy who they feel like can compete for that third running back spot. Dare Ogunbowale is now a Raider, and he will battle undrafted free agent Roman Hemby and special teams RB Dylan Laube for the likely final RB spot on the 53-man roster. He worked out with the Raiders at training camp before signing. Vegas obviously liked what they saw.
Dare Ogunbowale brings what the other two RBs don’t
Ogunbowale has been in the league since 2017 and spent the last four years with the Houston Texans. The 32-year-old running back has only started nine games in nine years. He’s appeared in 114 career games, amassing 594 career rushing yards and five career rushing touchdowns.
His value in Houston was never about carrying the ball, though. Ogunbowale carved out a role as a special teams contributor and third-down back who could help in the passing game. He actually has more career receiving yards than rushing yards, with nearly 900 receiving yards. He’s
The Raiders need that. They don’t need someone to come in and take a ton of snaps running the ball. They don’t need someone who’s going to be a starter, or even the second back. Vegas has that.
What they need is a guy who can do what Ogunbowale does. He’s going to be a guy who can fill in when one of the two main guys is injured. He can be that third-down-and-long back that’s used in the passing game. This is a good signing by Vegas, and we could see that soon. Vegas also worked out tight end Chris Myarick and waived tight end Zack Kuntz and safety Tanner Wall.
