When the Minnesota Vikings signed quarterback Kyler Murray earlier this offseason, most people expected him to be named the starter rather quickly. As we have seen, head coach Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings are maintaining that this is a legitimate competition against J.J. McCarthy, but everyone sees how things are trending.

During the first episode of 13 Personnel, A to Z Sports analysts Easton Freeze, Austin Stanley, and Ryan Roberts talked about the supposed quarterback competition. There was an agreement that this isn’t a real competition and Murray will be named the starter eventually.

Freeze, in particular, is extremely high on what Murray and the Vikings can accomplish during his prove-it 2026 season.

“I think the Vikings are going to win double-digit games this season,” Freeze said. “I think they are going to get into the playoffs. And I think Kyler Murray is going to be the Comeback Player of the Year. The NFC North is a ridiculous gauntlet of a division, and any of those four teams could win it, so predicting a division title feels reckless. But double-digit wins and some hardware for Murray at the end of the season? That feels very real.”

While both Stanley and Roberts shared an optimistic view about what Murray can accomplish, Freeze definitely took those expectations to new heights.

The NFC North is going to come down to health

Every team in the NFC North believes it can win the division, and they each absolutely can. The Lions, Packers, Bears, and Vikings all have legitimate cases. That division is truly going to come down to who stays healthiest. Whichever team avoids the injury bug will be the one standing at the top.

The long-term question looming over Minnesota

This quarterback battle feels more like a college situation than a typical NFL competition. In college, you have the veteran who gets the first nod and the younger player who earns his way onto the field over time. McCarthy is almost the freshman in this scenario, even though he has been with the organization for a couple of years.

If Murray wins the job and it works, the path forward gets complicated.

If Murray does not work out and his contract expires, the Vikings know the 2027 NFL Draft class is loaded with quarterback talent. They could pivot quickly. But if Murray succeeds and McCarthy never establishes himself, McCarthy starts drifting into Will Levis territory. He becomes a player on the roster with talent you believe could translate, but it just has not worked out.

The faster you can move him, the better, but finding a trade partner willing to take that gamble is far from guaranteed.

The Vikings are in an enviable position with their roster talent, but the quarterback room carries real complexity that will define their next two seasons. Murray’s arrival gives them the best chance to compete right now. What happens after that is anyone’s guess.

What’s on the line for Murray

The Arizona Cardinals made the decision this offseason that the Kyler Murray era was over. In the process, the Cardinals are paying the talented quarterback a lot of money to make plays with the Vikings this season. For Minnesota, they are paying him pennies to prove that he can still be a franchise quarterback in this league.

Murray has one year to prove that he is still an evolving quarterback despite him entering year eight in the NFL. With every practice, it appears that Murray is picking up the complicated O’Connell offense. Just imagine how good he can be when everything does click mentally. That is the bet that the Vikings staff is making.
