The Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy will be the talk of training camp, and the nation. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has quite the decision to make, but we still don’t know when he will do that.

After the final minicamp practice on June 11th, O’Connell elaborated on the timing nature of the decision.

“Those guys both know we have a plan in place to make sure that the decision we make is going to be about what’s best for the Minnesota Vikings. The timeline of that does involve making sure we get our starter ready to go. We want to make sure by the time we play the Green Bay Packers that there’s been ample time to have the best possible offense we can have to help our football team. The quarterback’s going to play a big role in that. So, that’s kind of where we’re at right now, as far as the timeline goes.

“I think to give an actual date would be not necessarily accurate from a portrayal of how we see it, but there is a timeline to make sure that we can allow the competition to continue and advance and really lay out a training camp that will allow us to do that, but also make a timely decision.”

There are plenty of times throughout training camp where O’Connell can make the important decision. Let’s break down each potential date.

August 8th

This would be the first time where I could realistically see O’Connell naming a starting quarterback. It would be one week after the first public practice and right before the night practice, which is the biggest event of training camp. It would set the stage for the fanbase to essentially welcome the new starting quarterback. Now, the decision would be early on in the process, and O’Connell would have questions to answer about the viability of it.

August 10th

With a quick competition, this would also make sense for the opposite way of the above date: it would prevent the fanbase from potentially being frustrated at the night practice. They could also use said practice as a part of the evaluation process. A lot of the night practice is focused on one-on-ones and individual drills to put on a show, so they can use that to maximize both quarterbacks.

August 13th

Simply put, it’s two days before the Vikings have their first preseason game. Naming a starter here would allow O’Connell to use all three preseason games and lead up to them to prepare. It would also mark about two weeks for the competition, which is arguably enough time.

August 16th

This would be the day after the first preseason game and right before the joint practices with the Baltimore Ravens. That will give O’Connell the ability to see his starting quarterback against the first-team Ravens defense. However, doing so before the joint practices in this way wouldn’t be the preferred strategy.

August 23rd

In my opinion, this is the optimal time to name a starting quarterback. It gives you just over three weeks to determine who will win the starting quarterback job. It’s the perfect amount of time to figure things out while putting players in different positions to gather as much information as possible.

The most important thing is simple: it gives the Vikings a natural runway to allow the starter to get comfortable in their position. This has been important for O’Connell the entire time, as the competition is set up specifically to help the 2026 team.

Anything later won’t be ideal

If the Vikings can’t find a way to name a starting quarterback before this point, it’s likely one of two things: either both quarterbacks are incredible, and it’s impossible to choose, or both quarterbacks haven’t been good enough, and it’s impossible to pick between them. There are certainly variables that can impact it, but they will have a lot of information on the quarterbacks.

There was a report that the competition would last until the start of the season, but that doesn’t align with what O’Connell has been saying all along. It’s a complicated process, but there is a pathway for the Vikings to make the competition real and have enough time to maximize the 2026 season.
