Stefon Diggs spoke with the media for the first time since arriving in Washington, and the new Commanders receiver made one thing abundantly clear: this move was personal. After Friday’s practice, Diggs covered a lot of ground during a 14-minute session with reporters, but one item in particular stood out as the most intriguing.

Diggs explained how every time he came to play the Commanders with other teams throughout his career, it always fired him up. He’s from Gaithersburg, Maryland and knowing he was going home to play in front of friends and family put an extra chip on his shoulder. He wanted to show out in front of everyone, and that desire always helped him bring his A-game against Washington.

“It’s a different level of pride,” Diggs told reporters. “You know, it’s kind of like I’m gonna give you the honest answer. I used to come home when we used to play the Commanders/Redskins back in the day, and I always felt like I had something to prove. You know, because that’s my hometown team. Them and the Baltimore Ravens. Like, I always play with a chip on my shoulder, but the chip got really big when I go home because that’s your hometown team, and I kind of always felt like they they passed up on me.

“They didn’t give me a chance. I was right in their backyard, so kind of coming full circle moment. You know, it’s like look at God, look how things happen. God works in mysterious ways, and timing is everything. So here I am back home, and I carry that same chip. But I’m a part of the team now.”

The Commanders always had the secret sauce when it came to signing Diggs in free agency. Sure, a significantly larger offer from a different team could have swayed his opinion, but as we know, the market for Diggs probably wasn’t at the point where somebody was going to grossly overpay for him. Washington didn’t overpay, either. Their deal is a solid deal.

Regardless, Diggs’ itch to win a ring in his hometown is what drove him to sign with the Commanders. You can hear the fire in his voice. During one response, he even said it gave him chills thinking about it, about his younger self wearing the burgundy and gold at this point in his career and the potential that comes with it.

“I can’t write a better story,” said Diggs. “You know, at this point in my career and what I want to do, and being able to be healthy and coming off ACL, having success, and going to your hometown team and want to shine for them, and you know I want to put on for my city. I’m always gonna want to do that. You know what I’m saying? I did it when I was away, and I want to do it when I’m home. So it definitely means a lot to me.”

It’s not just the hometown connection driving Diggs to Washington

The homecoming narrative is compelling on its own, but it’s not the only factor that drove Diggs’ decision to join the Commanders. It’s the roster.

Diggs was paying attention in 2024 when Jayden Daniels and the rest of the team took the league by storm. He also understands the mismatches this offense represents with Daniels at quarterback, a solid and deep running back room, Terry McLaurin at receiver, and Chig Okonkwo at tight end.

“It’s good being around other players that can ball,” said Diggs. “Like, it’s gonna be hard to double somebody in this office. You got guys that can make plays, and guys who can make plays out of the backfield. You got a mobile quarterback.”

So suffice to say, Diggs views the Commanders as the best situation for him. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be here. And that should lead to big things on the football field in 2026.
