The Oklahoma Sooners only have one commit in their 2028 recruiting class, but could soon land Dedrick Kimbrough.
The Oklahoma Sooners are making a strong push for 2028 four-star wide receiver Dedrick Kimbrough, and the early returns suggest OU sits in the driver’s seat.
According to Rivals’ Chad Simmons, no school has communicated with Kimbrough more consistently than Oklahoma, and the Southeast’s fastest-rising playmaker has the Sooners at the top of his list. Kimbrough is ranked No. 191 in the Rivals industry rankings and has drawn interest from Miami, Notre Dame, and Florida, among others. But OU’s relentless recruiting effort has separated the Sooners from the pack.
The Sooners currently have just one commitment in their 2028 recruiting class, quarterback Trey Tagliaferri. Landing Kimbrough would provide a massive jolt of momentum for a class that is still in its early stages.
Kimbrough says Oklahoma has made him feel like a priority
Kimbrough has been vocal about OU’s recruitment of him, and his words paint a clear picture of a staff that refuses to let up.
“I don’t think there’s been a day that has gone by without hearing from someone on their staff. They’ve been pretty consistent talking with me and my parents. Oklahoma has really made me feel like a priority,” Kimbrough told Rivals.
He went further in describing what draws him to Norman.
“I definitely like the intensity Coach Venables talks about and the way that translates from the coaches to the players. I also like the family feel they give,” Kimbrough said. “They make it known that I’m a priority and that they would love to have me in their program. Oklahoma has that number 1 spot right now for me because of the way they recruit me and the relationships. I can’t wait to get out there and see what it’s like on game day. I’m looking to see how I fit in the system. Then I really watch how the coaches handle the little things during the game and how they push the players to be their best.”
That level of detail from a recruit this early in the cycle is telling. Kimbrough isn’t just interested; he’s already evaluating how he fits within the program. That kind of buy-in from a top-200 national prospect reflects well on Brent Venables and the entire coaching staff.
A Rivals prediction backs up OU’s position
It’s not just Kimbrough’s words suggesting the Sooners are in strong shape. A Rivals insider recently placed a prediction for OU to land Kimbrough with a confidence rating of 7 out of 10. That’s a high mark this early in the process.
That said, Florida, Miami, and Notre Dame remain in the picture. Kimbrough is a talented player who will continue to draw attention from blue-blood programs. Ruling any of them out entirely would be premature.
What Kimbrough brings to the table
When you look at Kimbrough’s profile, he’s the type of receiver offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle should love. At 6’2, 180 pounds, Kimbrough has the size and frame to compete in the SEC. He’s a polished route runner with speed and the physical tools to develop into a matchup problem at the next level.
The Sooners have built one of the best 2027 recruiting classes in the country, sitting at No. 1 nationally. Getting an early start on 2028 with a player of Kimbrough’s caliber would continue that momentum and signal to future recruits that Oklahoma is a destination program under Venables.
