New details reveal how the Lady Vols’ upset win over UConn in 2025 led to Geno Auriemma going psycho on one of his players
In 2025, the Lady Vols upset UConn, and it led to Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma going full psycho on one of his best players.
The top moment for the Lady Vols during the Kim Caldwell era was easily the upset win over UConn in early 2025.
Tennessee beat No. 5 UConn 80-76 in Knoxville in Caldwell’s first season as the Lady Vols’ head coach.
It was UT’s first win over UConn since 2007.
The loss to the Lady Vols sent UConn head coach Geno Auriemma over the edge
UConn didn’t lose another game after the loss to Tennessee.
That’s partly because Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma apparently went full psycho on his best player, Paige Bueckers, after the loss.
The situation is detailed in the Apple TV series that debuts on Friday titled “The Dynasty: UConn Huskies.”
USA Today provided the details of the interaction.
From USA Today: Filmmakers captured pivotal moments in that season, like how Auriemma challenged Bueckers after UConn’s loss to Tennessee in front of the team during a film session. In the documentary, Bueckers called it “devastating” and questioned if she still wanted to be at UConn.
“I took a risk,” Auriemma says. “(Bueckers) is either going to quit or she’s going to change. So I tried to hurt her like losing hurts.”
“It was very awkward to be in there,” Sarah Strong, then a freshman, says in the third episode. “I wasn’t expecting him to attack Paige like that. He was just yelling at her and, I don’t know, just saying really hurtful things to her. It was really shocking to me.”
Auriemma’s approach clearly worked since UConn won the national championship that season. But man, that’s an intense reaction to the loss to Tennessee. At some point you have to wonder if winning or being a mentor is more important to him…
