The Miami Hurricanes got their 2026 season off to a tremendous start on Friday night at Stanford, rolling up the Cardinal 45-6.

The game kicked off shortly after 9:05 pm ET. By 9:30, Malachi Toney had two touchdowns and had already hit the Heisman Trophy celebration pose twice.

Some might laugh at the seeming prematurity of the celebration. But Toney’s unbelievable day was no laughing matter for the Cardinal, nor anyone else on Miami’s schedule watching the game.

Toney finished the game with 12 catches for 234 yards and three touchdowns. The 234 receiving yards put him in the university’s record books for the most receiving yards in a single game.

The previous record was 220 yards by Eddie Brown back in 1984, so it’s one that’s stood the test of time through Miami’s elite runs to four of their five national titles. Players like Michael Irvin, Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss, Andre Johnson, and many others never could reach that mark.

But Toney was almost there at halftime. He had 10 catches for 182 yards and two scores before the break.

And he showed just how incredibly dangerous he can be in Miami’s offense this year. Last year, the vast majority of his yards came after the catch. On Friday, with the pinpoint touch of Darian Mensah, he was a force down the field. He shook a defender with a nasty post corner and turned up the sideline for 48 yards on Miami’s opening play. He broke the record by getting behind Stanford’s secondary for a 47-yard score in the third quarter.

It’s clear Toney has found another gear this year, and he and Mensah are just getting started building chemistry in game settings. The sky is limitless for him and the Hurricanes this year, and it could be one that sees him in New York City in December as a true threat to take home the Hurricanes’ first Heisman Trophy since 1992.
