A key Tennessee Vols player was just described as a ‘trained assassin’ and the rest of college football is finding out the hard way
The Tennessee Vols have an alpha at wide receiver, and everyone in college football is now well aware.
Tennessee fans have known that junior wide receiver Mike Matthews is more than just a pass catcher.
And now the rest of college football is finding out.
Matthews, a former five-star recruit out of Parkview High School in Georgia, is one of the fastest players on Tennessee’s roster. He’s an elite pass catcher with great body control who has the traits to be a standout player at the next level.
He’s also not afraid to get dirty.
Vols fans saw last season that Matthews is more than willing to get physical in the passing game.
And in Tennessee’s Week 1 win against Furman, all of college football saw it — thanks to a viral clip that ESPN’s Cole Cubelic tweeted out.
“Let me just say this: I’m not sure I knew that Mike Matthews is a trained assassin,” said Cubelic this week. “I don’t know if I knew that or not. He’s a good player with a big catch radius and he’s fast. A big body. I didn’t know that he was this guy — because he’s out there blocking people. He’s pancaking people onto the checkerboard in the end zone and getting in people’s face.
“Tennessee over the years has had a guy at wide receiver who has been the alpha, and they might have it again.”
Matthews is a complete receiver who seems to be flying under the radar nationally. But he’s starting to get his flowers. And I have a feeling there will be a lot more praise coming his way this fall.
