The Kansas City Chiefs have released their second injury report ahead of the season opener against the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football.”

Starting LT Josh Simmons and starting SS Chamarri Conner remain absent from practice as they deal with injuries. Neither has practiced since training camp; Simmons due to a back injury and Conner due to a knee injury. Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo spoke on Friday about the expected absence of Conner in Week 1. This is one of the first games since Conner arrived that he won’t be available.

“I guess he told me he might have had a concussion one time last year,” Spagnuolo said. “But I like Chamarri (Conner). I don’t know if I want to go into a game without him. Because, listen, he’s played a lot of different sports for us. He’s been nickel. He’s been safety. All over the place. Played dime linebacker one time. We’re gonna miss him. I’m just, you know, praying he gets healthy and gets back because the sooner we get him back, the better off we’ll be.”

Here’s a quick breakdown of the second injury reports for Week 1. Keep in mind that clubs can make additions to the injury report all the way up to Week 1’s kickoff on Monday. They will release game status designations on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Observations

  • Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy told reporters that the team held a physical practice on Thursday. It appears that no one came out of that practice worse for wear as Chris Jones spoke with media members ahead of practice. The team typically doesn’t allow injured players to speak at media availability.
  • Jones’ injury limitation suggests he tweaked his calf at some point during practice on Friday. Kansas City can hardly afford an injury here, as Jones is the team’s most veteran leader on defense. They need him at 100% for this game.
  • If Jones is unable to play in Week 1, that’d leave the team with Khyiris Tonga, Peter Woods, and newcomer Bryson Eason. Two rookies (Woods, Eason) and a player in his first year with the team (Tonga). The team also has DT Marcus Harris on the practice squad.
