Brian Schottenheimer shows how he feels Cowboys DC Christian Parker following Week 1 loss, and he can’t afford to be wrong
The Dallas Cowboys need the defense to turn the ship around quickly. And for head coach Brian Schottenheimer, his job security might be at stake.
It took one game for Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker to go from the fanbase’s new hope to the target of its ire. Understandably so, given the atrocious outing of his unit against the New York Giants in Week 1.
But is it time to press the panic button on Parker one week into his tenure? Head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed his feelings on it on Monday as he addressed reporters for the first time this week.
And with the way things are going, he can’t afford to be wrong.
Schottenheimer backs Cowboys DC
After acknowledging the defense’s mistakes in the season opener, Schottenheimer talked about his confidence in Parker turning it around.
“I’m around him every day,” Schottenheimer said Monday. “There’s adversity all the time in what we do. You guys don’t hear about all of it. You guys don’t see all of it. You don’t deal with all of it. But whether it’s the things we deal with off the field, whether it’s the things we deal with in coaching meetings and discussions that we have from a strategy standpoint, from a personnel standpoint, and until you go through all those things, you don’t really know.”
Now they know: their plan and execution wasn’t good enough. The question in, what now? Does he expect the Cowboys defensive coordinator to turn the ship around after giving up nine first downs in 11 third down attempts?
“I have no question Parker is the right guy for this job,” Schottenheimer added. “He’s an outstanding coach. He will learn from this. Just like our young players are going to learn from this, we’re going to play our young players this weekend, too, and they’re going to play better, and Christian’s gonna call a better game this week and feel better about it.”
There’s a long season ahead of the Cowboys for Parker to prove Schottenheimer right. If he doesn’t, it might just genuinely shove the head coach into hot seat territory.
Schottenheimer’s job security hinges on Cowboys 2026 success
The focus is on Parker and the Cowboys defense but there’s a reality that’s becoming clear: defensive struggles could cost Schottenheimer his job.
It’s true, he was the playcaller of one of the best offenses in the league last year. But on Sunday, the Giants looked like the most put together team in Game 1 of the John Harbaugh era. They also looked liked the more physical team. And the play calling consistently caught the Cowboys off guard.
Schottenheimer has been praised for the culture he’s building in Dallas, but that won’t outweight the lack of wins if this year goes just like 2025 did.
Since Dak Prescott arrived at Dallas in 2016, no head coach has led the team to consecutive losing seasons. A losing record this year would make Schottenheimer the first.
To be clear, I’m not predicting the Cowboys will end the season on a losing record. But it’s more than obvious they will if the defense doesn’t turn it around quickly.
And I wouldn’t bet on Schottenheimer living to fight another day in 2027 if that’s the case.
