Clemson’s identity crisis under Dabo Swinney

Swinney is still trying to respond to the embarrassing opening game against LSU, a 51-10 beatdown that exposed the Tigers in every phase. Instead of bouncing back with authority against a G6 opponent, Clemson managed only a 22-7 win against Georgia Southern.

This team simply doesn’t have an identity. They don’t have the energy you’d expect from a squad led by a former national championship-winning coach coming off a 7-6 season. You’d think they would be more capable of responding to a down year.

The most glaring issue holding Clemson back is one of the most idiotic coordinator hires in recent memory. Bringing Chad Morris back to orchestrate this offense has completely stalled any momentum Swinney hoped to build. The play-calling has been lifeless, and the results speak for themselves.

If Swinney loses this game, the season could potentially spiral. Their next game is on the West Coast on a Friday night against Cal. They then have to come back to the East Coast to face Miami, the obvious best team in the conference. A loss to UNC would put Clemson in a brutal stretch with very little margin for error.

Bill Belichick’s UNC program faces its own crossroads

On the other end, UNC opened the year with a surprise victory over TCU, winning a low-scoring defensive battle before beating FCS opponent ETSU. It’s been a solid start on the field, but distractions surround Belichick’s program. General manager Michael Lombardi stepped down, and an investigation into the program’s culture is underway, with some concerning allegations.

Beating Clemson and then challenging Notre Dame on Oct. 3 could shift the perception of where this program is headed. The Tar Heels would have chances to stack wins against Pitt, Duke, and Syracuse before facing Miami on Halloween. A victory this weekend would go a long way toward quieting the noise and proving that Belichick’s vision for UNC football is taking root despite the off-field turbulence.

Both coaches need this game badly

Both of these teams need a win in a very bad way. For Swinney, it’s about proving that Clemson can still compete at the top of the ACC and that his program hasn’t completely eroded. For Belichick, it’s about building credibility in the college game and showing that the early results aren’t a mirage. This matchup won’t get the same amount of attention as the SEC slate, but the stakes for both coaches are as high as they get.
