Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad elevations for Week 2 vs. Indianapolis Colts boost defensive and special teams depth
The Kansas City Chiefs have elevated LB Cole Christiansen and DT Marcus Harris for Week 2’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.
The Kansas City Chiefs officially made two practice squad elevations ahead of Week 2 against the Indianapolis Colts on “Sunday Night Football.”
For the second consecutive week, the Chiefs ruled out two players ahead of their game. Although they ruled out the same two players as in Week 1, the team has different roster needs to address in Week 2. Kansas City likes to maximize practice squad elevations, sometimes even rewarding practice squad players with a game check. This week, the need for elevations feels genuine.
Here’s a quick reminder of the league’s practice squad elevation rules:
Practice Squad Elevation Rules
NFL clubs can elevate up to two players per week without signing them to the 53-man roster. This temporarily expands 53-man rosters to as many as 55 players, but it does not expand game-day roster limits (48).
- Players can only receive 3 standard elevations per season.
- Following the game, players automatically revert to the practice squad.
- Practice squad elevations reset for the postseason.
Chiefs elevate practice squad LB Cole Christiansen, DT Marcus Harris for Week 2 vs. Colts
If you read our story on linebacker tryouts this week, you already know that Christiansen was expected to be elevated from the practice squad. He’ll help to fill the gap left by Cooper McDonald, who was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.
The 29-year-old has been with the Kansas City Chiefs since the 2022 NFL season and is a two-time Super Bowl champion. He has appeared in 18 career regular-season games for Kansas City without a start. Listed at 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds, Christiansen has five total tackles in those games, mostly on Dave Toub’s special teams unit. Christiansen also appeared in three postseason games in 2023, recording two combined tackles.
As for DT Marcus Harris, this is Harris’ second consecutive practice squad elevation for the Chiefs. With Chris Jones listed as questionable, plus DT Bryson Eason only eight practices into his Kansas City career, it makes sense. Harris played five defensive snaps in Week 1 vs. the Denver Broncos and recorded one total tackle.
