The Lions have checked in on a former Pro Bowl cornerback, and the timing suddenly makes a lot of sense
NFL Network reports Detroit is among several teams that have contacted an experienced free-agent corner who could give the Lions considerably more flexibility in the secondary. Mike Garafolo reported Sunday that Detroit has checked in on Kenny Moore II and that multiple teams have shown interest, with Moore expected to sign somewhere soon
The Detroit Lions could use some help at cornerback, and there is no doubt about that whatsoever. The good news is that they appear to be doing their due diligence in the market. They recently “checked in” on a former Pro Bowler recently per Mike Garofolo of NFL Network.
The Lions have checked in on cornerback Kenny Moore
“Sounds like he’s got a lot of interest from multiple teams in need of a cornerback because of depth reasons and injury reasons. The Lions [are] amongst the teams that have checked in on Kenny Moore.” Garofolo said on The Insiders Sunday. “I’m expecting the veteran former Pro Bowler to sign with a team in the very near future.”
Moore has been in the league since 2017 and at one point in time was considered to be the best slot cornerback in the NFL. In 2021, he made the Pro Bowl. He started for the Colts from 2018 to 2025, and then the Colts released him ahead of free agency as a cost-cutting move.
Moore fits what the Lions want to do because he’s smart, physical, and willing to tackle. He can play man coverage, handle zone responsibilities, and blitz off the edge. The Lions might not have viewed him as an obvious fit during the offseason because they already had multiple players who could play in the slot, but injuries have changed the equation.
If Avonte Maddox can’t go, the Lions may need to move Christian Izien back to safety. That would allow Moore to step into the slot while Roger McCreary either moves outside or rotates with Rock Ya-Sin. Moore wouldn’t solve Detroit’s outside-corner problem by himself, but adding him would give the Lions enough flexibility to move other pieces around and potentially keep Ya-Sin from being left on an island all afternoon.
