Tennessee made a brilliant scheduling move on Wednesday for the Vols football program.

The Volunteers announced that their season openers in 2027 and 2028 have been moved to Week 0.

Tennessee will now open the 2027 season at home against Georgia Tech on August 27 and they’ll open the 2028 season in Charlotte against West Virginia on August 26.

Moving those games to Week 0 will give the Vols an additional bye week in 2027 and 2028.

And that’s a big deal — especially with the new nine game SEC conference schedule.

Tennessee is already beat up this season, and they don’t have their bye week until October 31.

That means after playing Texas, the Vols still have consecutive games against Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama, and South Carolina before a much needed off week.

Tennessee is currently dealing with injuries to offensive guard Wendell Moe, running back Javin Gordon, and various defensive linemen, among others.

A second bye week this season — regardless of where it was on the calendar — would’ve been beneficial for Tennessee.

SEC games are as physical as ever, and depth is impossible to build. Simply staying healthy is one of the biggest ingredients to a championship season. A second bye week will certainly help the Vols to stay healthy(ish) over the next two years.
