The NFL’s latest Miami Dolphins snub is almost impossible to wrap your head around

It’s not a surprise when a Miami Dolphins player is snubbed for an accolade. But this? It’s a bridge too far.

You’re probably accustomed to it by now. A great performance by a Miami Dolphins player gets overlooked on account of the team’s lack of national profile. It’s happened for years, so it’s become something of old hat.

But this latest development? It’s almost unfathomable, even by Miami Dolphins snub standards. Because Dolphins rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez was passed over for the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month selection. In favor of a defender who also happens to play on an 0-3 football team.

Miami Dolphins rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez snubbed for Defensive Rookie of the Month

Tennessee Titans rookie linebacker Anthony Hill ultimately got tabbed as the September selection for rookie of the month. He’s been quite good. And, with 34 tackles, he’s currently leading the NFL — not just among rookies. It’s an impressive feat. But it does not match what Rodriguez has done in the first three weeks of the season.

Yes, Hill has an advantage in total tackles by a 34 to 28 margin. On 39 additional defensive snaps. And Rodriguez has posted an (incredible) interception, along with three tackles for loss. Hill has neither, just two passes defensed. Rodriguez has a quarterback knockdown in pressure — Hill has none.

So if the voting wants to award Hill for playing more snaps and making less impact plays? So be it. Hopefully the next time around the criteria will expand a little bit further than just the tackle numbers. If it does, I would guess Rodriguez will have a better chance to collect the honor. I guess we’ll see.
