Alabama’s mounting injuries on defense may have been a blessing in disguise as talented true freshman bursts onto the scene
With two key defenders sidelined, the Alabama Crimson Tide turned to its highest-rated 2026 signee against Mississippi State. What he did on Saturday should change how Kalen DeBoer’s defense looks heading into a showdown with Georgia.
Alabama’s win over Mississippi State on Saturday will be remembered as an offensive explosion. On the other side of the ball, though, the Crimson Tide got a breakout performance from true freshman linebacker Xavier Griffin. If not for injuries, that game may never have happened.
Griffin is getting more time in the lineup with Justin Hill and Desmond Zulu both out for the considerable future. So the immediate question became who would fill the void for Alabama’s defense. Griffin helped answer it in a big way.
Xavier Griffin vs. Mississippi State stats
- Nine tackles (team high)
- One tackle for loss
- 1.5 sacks
Xavier Griffin played all over the Alabama defense
What stood out most was where Griffin lined up. He played stack backer, whether that was at the Mike or the Stinger, and he also spent time along the edge at the Bandit and Wolf positions for the Crimson Tide defense.
That’s a lot to put on a true freshman’s plate, and he handled all of it. Griffin finished the day leading the Crimson Tide with nine tackles. On top of that, he added a tackle for loss and a sack and a half. He was all over the football field against Mississippi State.
Griffin was the highest-rated signee in Alabama’s 2026 class, and he has looked every bit of that. To be out there dominating as a true freshman tells you everything you need to know. This guy is going to be a problem for years to come.
Griffin is drawing a familiar comparison
Griffin looked a lot like Jihaad Campbell did on Saturday. Maybe it’s the No. 11 and the build, but the versatility he brings to Alabama’s defense is insane. Few players can move from the second level to the edge and look comfortable doing both.
That versatility is exactly why the Tide can’t afford to keep him on the sideline. Losing Hill and Zulu hurts, and nobody wants to see players go down. But because it forced Griffin into a bigger role, and now that he has shown what he can do, there’s no going back.
Alabama needs Xavier Griffin on the field against Georgia
The stakes go up in a big way this weekend when the Georgia Bulldogs come calling. Alabama is going to have to play its best game of the year to this point.
There can’t be slow starts. There can’t be lapses in coverage in the secondary. There can’t be bad play calls. Against a team like Georgia, every mistake gets magnified.
That’s where Griffin comes in. He needs to be on the field as much as possible, whether that’s chasing down ball carriers from the stacked backer spot or getting after the quarterback off the edge.
Alabama is going to need every bit of juice it has against Georgia, and Xavier Griffin brings a lot of it.
