3 Winners and 5 Losers From Cowboys Loss at Lambeau: Another week, another embarrassing performance
The Dallas Cowboys losing isn’t new. The offense looking this bad is, and it puts QB Dak Prescott and HC Brian Schottenheimer under the microscope in this week’s winners and losers.
That was as bad as it gets for the Dallas Cowboys as they lost to the Green Bay Packers 23-13.
We knew about the defensive woes but scoring seven points at Lambeau Field is unnaceptable. Let’s just cut to the chase and look into our immediate winners and losers as we do every wek.
Winners
LB Dee Winters
It’s been a tough year for Winters and with DeMarvion Overshown nearing a return, he was in need of a splash. He had one by picking off Jordan Love in a pass intended to the speedy Matthew Golden on the flat. He was close to a Pick-6, too, but Golden did make contact as he fell to the ground.
The Cowboys entered Week 6 as the only NFL team without an interception. Winters gets credit for ending the dry spell.
CB Joey Porter Jr.
The Cowboys would love to clone Joey Porter Jr. In increased playing time, Porter Jr. was still able to erase everything thrown his way. He finished the game with no receptions allowed and registered one tackle for loss to go with two pass breakups.
He can’t fix the Cowboys defense by himself, but he’s sure trying to. Dallas should think long and hard about extending him if he keeps this up.
TE Brevyn Spann-Ford
The more I see from BSF, the more I believe he needs to be the unquestioned TE1. He got the start and while he only made three catches for 13 yards, he showed off what he can do after the catch. He plays with grit and that’s something the offense needs more of.
Losers
HC Brian Schottenheimer
For the third consecutive week, we should question Schottenheimer’s game plan. Once again, the Cowboys were too conservative early in the game. More than anything, his offense consistently lost the chess battle to DC Jonathan Gannon.
A Dak Prescott-led offense struggling this much against the blitz is a serious problem and it’s one that showed itself again.
QB Dak Prescott
Though Schottenheimer’s been outclassed in these coaching battles, Prescott has been frustrated against the blitz, too. The Cowboys quarterback also missed a Packers safety dropping into coverage in one of his two first half interceptions. He finished the day with two picks, and it should’ve been at least four.
WR CeeDee Lamb
CeeDee led the Cowboys in receiving yards but his game wasn’t impactful enough to erase his first half mistake. One of Prescott’s two interceptions falls squarely on him. Lamb plants his inside foot to make his break and slips, giving the Packers DB the unconstested pick.
DB Caleb Downs
Film will review more. But targeting Downs was clearly a big part of the Packers’ plan on Sunday. The Cowboys want him to play near the line of scrimmage so he can be near the ball. But it wasn’t a good night for him in coverage, giving up 94 yards in 7 catches per Sumer Sports.
EDGE Malachi Lawrence
The other Cowboys first-round rookie made headlines earlier in the week because he was getting a bump in playing time. He didn’t do much with the start, as he finished with zero pressures and no tackles. He did get a pass deflection when playing deep in coverage (why?).
