Joe Milton is unlikely to play versus Dallas in Week 7, but another former Cowboy may get a chance at a revenge game

Jalen Hurts landing on injured reserve opened a roster spot in Philadelphia. The player who got it has a history with the Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys could see a familiar face on the other sideline when they face the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7. It just probably won’t be quarterback Joe Milton, despite the Jalen Hurts injury news shaking up Philadelphia’s depth chart.

Instead, it could be someone Cowboys fans know well. That’s former Dallas running back Jaydon Blue, who now has a spot on the Eagles’ 53-man roster.

Joe Milton isn’t the Eagles’ starter

On Saturday, the Eagles placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve. He had already been ruled out for Week 6 due to a superficial blood clot, and the team is being extra cautious because it is prioritizing Hurts’ health over anything else.

After that news, the Eagles poached Milton off the Cowboys’ practice squad.

For some, that move makes it seem like Milton is about to get a lot of playing time in Philadelphia. The truth is he isn’t the No. 1 quarterback on that depth chart. Tanner McKee is projected to start against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Depending on how McKee performs, some opportunities might emerge for Milton. However, it has been clear for a while that the Eagles like what McKee does as a backup, and they appreciate his familiarity with the scheme.

So don’t expect to see much of Milton in Week 7, when the Cowboys play the first of two showdowns with Philly this season.

Jaydon Blue gets his shot in Philadelphia

Here’s the twist: Hurts’ roster spot is going to Blue.

You probably know the name, even though he didn’t play much in Dallas. The Cowboys drafted Blue in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft, and the expectations were high after he joined the team.

Those expectations got derailed quickly. The Cowboys never fully trusted Blue’s work, and Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer consistently cited consistency issues for the running back throughout the 2025 season. Blue spent most of that year as a healthy scratch.

Surprisingly, he then missed the roster cut at the end of August. Dallas didn’t even bring him back to its practice squad, which led to Blue landing on the Eagles’ practice squad instead.

Now, as Philadelphia deals with multiple injuries in its running back room, the Eagles are signing him to the 53-man roster.

Why Blue could see the field against Dallas

I expect Blue to get significant playing time, and the reason is simple.

Saquon Barkley is out for Week 6 and his status is up in the air for Week 7. Backup RB Tank Bigsby is on IR and third string Will Shipley is doubtful for Week 6, too.

That means Blue might play a lot on Sunday behind Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele. Depending on how the Eagles’ backfield health progresses, the same could be true in Week 7.

Here’s the part that matters most for Dallas: Philadelphia didn’t have to put Blue on the 53-man roster just to get through one game. Elevating him from the practice squad was an option. Signing him strongly suggests the Eagles want Blue making an impact beyond Week 6.

That would mean playing time against the Cowboys.

I’d be lying if I told you I know how much work Blue will get against his former team. The Barkley situation will decide a lot of that. But a player Dallas gave up on could carry the ball against the Cowboys in a big NFC East game, and that’s not the kind of storyline the front office wants to deal with.
