James Madison’s College Football Playoff hopes took a major hit with last week’s heartbreaking loss at Appalachian State. Now, the 7-1 Dukes need more than a perfect finish to reach the 12-team playoff.

According to the A to Z Sports College Football Playoff Predictor, which has simulated the 2026 season 6,000 times, James Madison enters Week 9 with an 18% chance to make the CFP and a 54% chance to win the Sun Belt.

Even winning out and capturing the Sun Belt championship would only push JMU’s playoff chances to 37%.

So who should James Madison fans root against this weekend and beyond? Boise State, UTSA and New Mexico are the three biggest teams standing in the Dukes’ way. If the right results fall, JMU’s playoff probability could climb to 70%.

James Madison’s remaining schedule and CFP path

I think this part is pretty clear. JMU can’t afford another loss, and needs to finish the regular season 11-1.

Here is how each win moves the needle, according to the model:

– Troy: a win bumps the playoff odds from 18% to 20%

– At Southern Miss: another 2% jump, up to 22%

– At UConn: the biggest game left, worth a 7% jump from 22% to 29%

– Coastal Carolina: another 2% boost, up to 31%

The UConn game in Week 11 is the one to circle. That’s where James Madison can do itself the most good in the Group of Six race.

Win all four and the Dukes have an 88% chance to reach the Sun Belt Championship game. Win that title game too, and a 12-1 Sun Belt champion James Madison sits at a 37% chance to make the playoff. That would put JMU as an option for the No. 11 or 12 playoff seed. Also not nearly enough to relax.

The 3 teams James Madison fans should root against

This is where the scoreboard watching starts. A perfect finish only gets JMU so far, so the Dukes need help from around the country.

Boise State has to lose

The Broncos play Texas State this week, then Colorado State, Oregon State and its high-powered offense, San Diego State, and Utah State in the Pac-12. One Boise State loss, even the least impactful one (to Oregon State), adds 15 percentage points to JMU’s chances. A Boise State loss to Oregon State would push a 12-1 James Madison team’s projected playoff chances to 52%, according to the A to Z Sports predictor.

UTSA has to lose

The Roadrunners are on a bye this week, so this one will take some patience. The smallest-impact UTSA loss in the model comes against North Texas, and that alone gives the Dukes a five-percentage-point boost. Combine a Boise State loss, a UTSA loss, and a 12-1 Sun Belt title, and James Madison climbs to 57%.

New Mexico has to lose

The Lobos are another one-loss threat. They face San Jose State this week, followed by Nevada and UNLV, with Wyoming and Air Force on the schedule as well. If New Mexico also loses, the combined scenario of losses by Boise State, UTSA and New Mexico, along with a 12-1 Sun Belt champion James Madison, pushes JMU’s playoff chances to 70%.

An App State loss along the way would help, too. Oregon State is the odd one. James Madison fans might need the Beavers to beat Boise State, then turn around and need Oregon State to lose a game elsewhere. College football is goofy like that.

James Madison Rooting Guide

Three teams JMU needs to lose at least one game in the regular season to boost chances to be the Group of Six CFP representative.

  • Boise State: Preferred loss to Oregon State, model impact of +14 percentage points
  • UTSA: Preferred loss to North Texas, model impact of +5 percentage points
  • New Mexico: Preferred loss to San Jose State, model impact of +13 percentage points

How James Madison can make the College Football Playoff

So here’s the cleanest path I see. Boise State loses to Oregon State, UTSA loses to North Texas, New Mexico loses to San Jose State, and James Madison goes 12-1 as the Sun Belt champion. That combination puts the Dukes at a 70% chance to reach the playoff.

James Madison’s College Football Playoff hopes are far from finished, but the Dukes no longer control their own destiny. A Sun Belt championship and some help from Boise State, UTSA and New Mexico could dramatically improve their chances.
