Oklahoma Sooners finally get the good news they desperately needed after a brutal stretch that included Ben Arbuckle’s firing
The Oklahoma Sooners needed good news, and they got it with the commitment of Logan Lokey.
The Oklahoma Sooners haven’t had many good things happen in the last 24 hours. The program fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle. Then the men’s basketball team lost at home to East Texas A&M in a game Oklahoma should have won comfortably.
However, one bright spot emerged over the last few days. The Sooners landed a commitment from Logan Lokey, a defensive lineman in the 2028 recruiting class. Lokey is a Rivals300 prospect, and he gives Brent Venables another talented piece up front during a stretch when Oklahoma needed something positive.
Logan Lokey is exactly the type of player Oklahoma goes after
Logan Lokey recruiting profile
Lokey comes out of Guyer in Texas, and his recruiting profile speaks for itself. Four-star prospect, 89.99 composite rating, top 200 player in the country, top 20 player at his position, top 25 player in the state of Texas, 6-3, 245 pounds
The Sooners will keep recruiting at a high level on the defensive side of the ball as long as Venables is the coach in Norman. That has been the identity of this program under him, and Lokey fits that mold perfectly.
At 6-3, 245 pounds, Lokey already has the frame to contribute as a true freshman once he gets on campus. When you look at what Jake Kreul is doing this year, it’s clear why Oklahoma targets players like this. Kreul is having an amazing season, and the Sooners clearly want more guys who can step in early and make an impact.
Lokey is also excited about becoming a Sooner. He explained why Oklahoma stood out to him:
“Such an amazing opportunity to play for such a great and touted coach like Coach Chavis and a defensive-minded coach. It all felt like the perfect fit for me.”
That is what you love to hear from a recruit. Lokey still has a while before he arrives on campus as a 2028 prospect, but the Sooners have to be thrilled with this addition. The timing makes it even better.
Ben Arbuckle’s firing puts the offensive commitments in question
The bigger concern right now sits on the other side of the ball. With Arbuckle out, Oklahoma could start to see some offensive commitments waver.
Quarterback Jamison Roberts is one name to watch. He may stay committed, but when he was recently asked about his status, he said he had no comment at this time. That is not exactly a reassuring answer for Sooners fans.
To be fair, you can’t really blame any offensive recruit who decides to take another look at his options. The offensive coordinator who recruited them is gone. Players commit to relationships as much as they commit to schools, and losing the coach at the center of that relationship changes things.
That’s why the Lokey commitment matters so much. The defensive side of the recruiting operation is still rolling, and Oklahoma just added an elite player to its 2028 class. It takes a little bit of heat off the program and keeps some positive recruiting momentum going during a rough week for this team. Either way, the Sooners needed some good news this week, and they got it. Now we will see if they can keep that going on Saturday against Florida.
