3 winners and 3 million losers from the Oklahoma Sooners’ loss to South Carolina: OU’s defense plays one of the worst games we’ve seen them play
The Oklahoma Sooners season is practically over. Winners and losers emerge after the game.
The Oklahoma Sooners‘ season is over. Not that they have no games left to play, but there really isn’t anything left to play for. Their embarrassing loss to South Carolina on Saturday solidified their chances of making the College Football Playoff.
Several players were responsible for their poor play on Saturday for OU. Some players also played very well. Unfortunately, that doesn’t really matter after losing to the Gamecocks.
Winners in loss to South Carolina
Ivan Carreon, WR
His performance may have surprised everyone, but people have been asking to see more of Carreon for a minute now. Carreon has shown flashes over the last two years but hasn’t really been able to get on the field consistently. On Saturday, he had his career game, scoring two touchdowns. He also had five catches for 88 yards. This was the type of performance OU needed in the first half; unfortunately, he wasn’t seeing the field then.
Jacob Jordan, WR
Jordan had a decent day. He made the most of the few reps he got. Jordan finished with three catches for 25 yards, including a very impressive 12-yard sideline grab. Jordan is another guy fans have been asking to see more of.
Kip Lewis, LB
Lewis was one of the few guys on defense who actually played well. His pick-six was a huge reason they were even in the game to begin with. The offense couldn’t do anything, and he picked Sellers off and returned it for his third career pick-six. He also had half a sack.
Losers in loss to South Carolina
Defense
Yes, you read that: This is one of the worst defensive performances of any defense Brent Venables has put out there. The tackling was the worst it’s been this season. They couldn’t get any offensive player to the ground, and Sellers made the defensive line look like fools all game long. He did whatever he wanted.
The linebackers couldn’t cover, and there wasn’t enough pressure on the pocket. And when there was, the pressure didn’t move in the pocket to close rushing lanes. The secondary was awful as well. This defense just gave up 521 total yards. Yes, the offense didn’t help them, but the defense was terrible. It was pitiful.
Offense
Yes, the entire offense, aside from the guys mentioned. The run game went for just 3.7 yards per attempt. They finished with 100-plus rushing yards, but it never translated into anything. OU was 7-for-16 on third down and 0-for-1 on fourth down. They totaled 259 yards of offense, but had only 77 yards in the first half. This poor performance set them back and ended their season.
