The Tennessee Vols’ up and down 2026 season came to its conclusion on Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill. The Vols came from ahead to lose to 4 seed Virginia Commonwealth 5-4 in an elimination game. It marked the first time the Vols went winless in a regional, with Tennessee finishing at 38-22 on the year.

As such, the time has come to close the book on 2026 and look towards what Vol fans hope is a more competitive 2027 season in Knoxville. And, as with all things in college sports nowadays, that includes navigating the transfer portal.

Of course, that includes additions and losses in the portal, and the first shoe dropped regarding the latter on Monday, the first day that players can enter. According to Mike Wilson of VolQuest, freshman INF Ethan Moore is entering the portal.

Moore came to Knoxville from River Forest, Illinois as a relatively high recruit. He ranked as the No. 95 overall player and No. 35 shortstop by Perfect Game, as well as the No. 5 player and No. 2 shortstop in Illinois.

However, he didn’t end up earning any playing time his freshman year in Knoxville. The Vols’ sophomore middle infield of Manny Marin and Blake Grimmer carried the day for much of the season, with Marin earning 52 starts and Grimmer eventually settling in at second.

Moore will be just the first domino to fall as roster turnover begins this week. We’ll see if Josh Elander and his staff can turn those roster spots into some important acquisitions this month.
