Former Vols defender who left Tennessee after 2025 season made his feelings clear on having to switch positions during his time at UT
A former Tennessee Vols defender who landed with the Louisville Cardinals this offseason had some things to say about switching positions at UT.
Former four-star recruit Kaleb Beasley was a cornerback when he arrived at Tennessee as a true freshman in 2024.
Beasley, however, was a safety by the time he left Rocky Top after the 2025 season.
The Nashville native was moved to safety due to the Vols’ lack of depth at the position.
Beasley, who transferred to Louisville in January, spoke about the move to safety this past week, and he made it clear that he thought it was a good move for his career.
“My freshman year, I had two really good corners in front of me,” said Beasley. “I had Jermod McCoy and Rickey Gibson, who’s at Texas A&M now. And Jermod plays for the Raiders. My sophomore year, we still had the same guys, and we weren’t as deep at safety. So I was big enough to play (safety). I could play man. I could play zone.
“So they ended up moving me to safety, and I feel like it was a really good thing for me. I honestly like safety better than corner. I get more vision on the quarterback. I get to come down to tackle and play in the box. And I get to cover the slot. So I like it.”

Beasley’s comments are a great lesson to young athletes in all sports. Don’t play just one position. Don’t lock in on just being a cornerback or a wide receiver, or a quarterback (looking at you, Will Levis).
It’s true in baseball, too. Everyone wants to be a shortstop, but the other eight positions are pretty important, too. And when you’re on a team with a talented older player, the ability to be versatile is what will get you on the field.
