‘He’s met with Derek Owings, and both sides are going through the motions’ – Vols insider provides Chaz Coleman update for June 2

The Tennessee Volunteers’ ongoing saga with Penn State EDGE transfer addition Chaz Coleman, a rising sophomore, still hasn’t reached a resolution as we enter the month of June.

What’s the latest with the Tennessee Vols and EDGE Chaz Coleman?

That’s the daily question that college football fans are asking as we wait on a resolution in this ongoing saga.

Coleman, who transferred from Penn State to Tennessee in January, was one of the Vols’ biggest portal additions of the offseason.

The talented pass rusher, however, missed most of spring practice and hasn’t been around his teammates for offseason activities, which has put his status with the team up in the air.

Former Vols coach Doug Matthews said on 104.5 The Zone’s Big Orange Sunday this past weekend that Coleman has already been dismissed from the team, but VolQuest’s Austin Price and Brent Hubbs confirmed that’s not the case…at least not yet.

Price joined 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will on Tuesday morning and he shared the latest update on Coleman.

And it continues to sound like there’s very little chance Coleman plays football at Tennessee this fall.

“He’s still in the program,” said Price. “I know what Doug had on the show over the weekend. He’s still in the program. But at the end of the day, this thing’s headed toward where Doug had it at — which is that the chances of him being on this football team this fall are very, very small. It’s trending toward a matter of when, not if.

“He’s still not been in there in the weight room or anything. He’s met with (strength coach) Derek Owings. Both sides are kind of going through the motions and dotting i’s and checking boxes and all of that stuff. And again, I just don’t think it’s going to be a marriage that lasts much longer. But technically, he’s still part of the program.”

Reading between the lines, it seems that Tennessee is making sure it has all of its bases covered before officially moving on from Coleman, who has reportedly dealt with some off-the-field personal issues this offseason (as well as a head injury that he suffered late last season).

It feels like we’re nearing the end of this saga, but it’s still unclear when an official announcement will come.
