We already know that Tennessee Vols legend Peyton Manning will be rooting for his nephew Arch Manning when the Texas Longhorns visit Neyland Stadium on September 26.

Peyton, however, isn’t the only former Vols quarterback that will have some “family conflict” when Tennessee takes on Texas.

Former Tennessee QB Matt Simms is the brother of former Texas QB Chris Simms

Former Tennessee quarterback Matt Simms joined WNML’s SportsTalk this week and he acknowledged that there will probably be some trash talk next week with his brother, former Texas quarterback Chris Simms.

“Tennessee fans, I know that I didn’t play that great, but at least I showed up for the damn school,” said an exuberant Matt Simms.

“He loves burnt orange,” continued Matt while discussing his brother Chris. “He’s very proud to be a Texas Longhorn. And to a degree, I’m very proud with a small sliver of myself of being a Texas Longhorn after growing up and going to those games. But of course, with that matchup, yeah, no doubt some things will be said to each other that we’ll probably regret. But that’s what brothers do. We’ll work it out.”

As for the actual game, Matt Simms thinks a juiced up Texas team will be coming into Neyland Stadium.

“I think Texas is loaded with talent across the board,” said Matt. “I think they’re also a team very similar to ours — with their defensive attitude with Will Muschamp, their strength and conditioning, and just the shape that they were in playing in that heat down there in Texas. It was pretty obvious — although they missed some opportunities there in the first half — that there was a different vibe physically and emotionally about that football team.

“And I think that’s what would concern me most for Tennessee — especially with a young quarterback. You’ve got to be ready because this team is looking to get a national championship. They are going to be pissed off. And you really do have to be extra prepared and have a few extra aces up your sleeve, especially for Josh Heupel and calling plays. You can’t just run your standard stuff that you’ve been doing. You’ve got to have a few game-specific plays to help out your young quarterback. Get him out of the pocket. [He needs to] protect himself when he’s running, but [Tennessee] probably will have to use him running a little bit more than you had in the past two games.”

If Tennessee can somehow pull off a win, it’ll put the Vols right in the middle of the national championship conversation. But it won’t be easy. As Matt Simms pointed out — Texas is loaded with talent.

But the Vols have a lot of talent, too. It should be a fun one.
