The Tennessee Vols football program will get back to work this week as summer workouts are set to get underway.

And all eyes will be on Penn State transfer EDGE Chaz Coleman and whether he shows up and participates in workouts.

Coleman was one of the Volunteers’ biggest offseason transfer additions, but he missed time in spring while dealing with some off-the-field stuff.

Vols insider shares the latest update on Chaz Coleman

We’ve essentially been getting weekly updates on Coleman for the last six weeks, so it’s no surprise that we have another update this week as players return to campus.

VolQuest’s Austin Price shared the latest on Coleman on Tuesday during an appearance on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will.

“Well, you’d like to have him back out on the practice field, at workouts, and doing the weight room stuff with (strength coach) Derek Owings this week,” said Price. “Tennessee reconvenes today (May 26), and you’d love to have him out there. You’d love to have him be a part of it. We’ll see if that’s the case. There’s a lot of positive things that have happened over the last month with Chaz off the field, but that doesn’t guarantee that he’s going to be good to go.

“I said last week on Josh and Swain in Knoxville that I’d be shocked if he’s not out there. That was just based off what’s happened off-the-field over the last month that gives it a lot of positive traction. But that doesn’t mean that he’s going to be good to go with the stuff he’s got going on behind the scenes. So we’ll see. Again, in a perfect world, he’s out there at some point this week and kind of reacclimates to this team and goes from there. If he doesn’t [take part in workouts], if you’re Josh Heupel, there’s got to be a reason why he’s not out there — more so than he just doesn’t want to be. I mean, there’s got to be some type of reason that he’s not on the field. If not, then you’re putting yourself in a weird spot by letting him continue on with the team. So they’ve got to get that figured out pretty quick over the next 7 to 10 days.”

One thing that’s important to point out about this ordeal, just so some folks don’t get the wrong idea, is that Coleman’s situation is not like the Boo Carter situation from last summer. Coleman isn’t believed to be a distraction to the team.

“I don’t find [Coleman] to be a great distraction,” said VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs in April. “I don’t think it’s one of these deals where he’s dividing this [team]. This is not a Boo Carter situation. And I know that’s where a lot of people want to go with this. But Boo Carter was one of the best 11 defensive talents on the field. Josh Heupel did not handle that situation very well at all in July and August last year. Chaz Coleman’s not practicing enough to even know if he (is one of the best 11).”

We should find out fairly quickly this week if Coleman is working out with the team. Vols fans are certainly crossing their fingers that he’ll be out there.
